tasco from hong kong

Tasco's have not been made in Japan for 10 years or more.

It is not just optics that can be bought direct from China for a fraction of what they retail for in Canada. Chinese machine tools and accessories are much cheaper also. How cheap?, a Bridgeport mill clone that retails for $7000.00 at machine tool dealers in Calgary is $2300.00 FOB at the factory door.

A Japanese scope is probably top notch. Korean scopes are not so good and a Chinese scope is suspect.

Chinese ideas of quality control and following specifications are all over the place.

For a serious hunting trip I would prefer a quality scope. I trust the better grades of Bushnell. We have lots of quality scopes to choose from. Nikon, Pentax, Buris, Redfield, Leopold.

Cheap scopes are weak in the quality (repeatability) of the adjustment turrets and weak in seals. Once a hunting rifle is zeroed, the only concern is the seals. If they fail, the scope is toast.

I use mostly Weaver bases. I can take the scope off with a Loonie and switch to using the irons, which I always zero. If the rifle has no irons, I would prefer a better scope.

FWIW, I avoid see thru rings. I find they put the scope too high for quick aligmewnt as I shoulder the rifle. A friend of mine is a very experienced guide and he at one time also owned small gunstore. He told me the story of a guy who came into the store to buy a hunting rifle. He got some very good advice, which he followed. His son was with him and son insisted see thru rings were best (reads Guns and Blasting, my guess). My friend tried to talk him out of it, but failed. He sold him a safety strap for use in a tree stand.

Six months later he came back to the store to buy a set of regular (low) rings. A deer appeared from behind the tree stand and the irons were used to take a shot almost straight down. The scope was about a half inch from the eyebrow...

I got a Tasco 6-24x50AO with illuminated reticle, probably the same some other guys bought. About $80 all-in. It has clearer optics than I would have thought. I have it on my GC63, in 6.5x55, and after a year it's still just fine and I've had no problems with it at all; I was just shooting plates at 350 yards with it last week. I'm certain it's not going to take the abuse that a high end scope would take, but look at the cost of a Leupold 6-24x50 and you'll see why so many of these things are being bought by guys willing to give them a try. I'll likely get another couple of them.

My father uses a old fixed 4x tasco and see through rings for deer hunting. Never prevented him from taking a deer. The scope must be a decade old, atleast.

Got mine in the mail today. Its way beyond what you'd think you'd get for a $46.00 scope. You can actually see something reasonably sharp at 24x. I'd say its at least as good as the $99 Tasco's they have on sale at Cabellas (edit: and the $99 scope isn't 50mm or have an illuminated reticle). The illuminated mildot reticle is pretty cool. I'll have some fun with it on my single shot 22.

I'm curious how you are supposed to use the curved rangefinding part of the lower reticle.

Its a great looking scope. I bought it for my Mini 30, so i will never know if its good or a bad scope :D

Its optics are pretty good tho.
I have a leopold on my 6.5 x 55 Mauser tho.

I wondered about some of them cheep Ebay scopes.

What about them Russian hammer finished ones on ebay? Anyone buy one of them Cheep sniper scopes? there like $200 so not that cheep.

They look all Hammer finished and heavy made in the 1950s when they used radio tubes ect.

Got out and tested out the Hong Kong special, Bushnell 6-24x50 AO scope today on my heavy barrel target 22. It was easy to sight in and adjust and the image quality at 24x is reasonably sharp for target shooting. You can quite clearly see the 22 cal holes at 100 yards and the mildot reticle is great once you've determined the holdover. I'm not sure I'd be ready to endorse it for use in the field for anything of importance, but for target shooting or gophers its one hell of a deal.
