Tasco on my .300???

I have a Savage 110 in 300 win mag. I rescently took a nice older Tasco 4-16x40 with paralax adjustment on trade from another cgn'r. It is one of the older made in Japan Tascos that were suppose to be better quality. I am quite happy with this rifle/scope combo but was wondering if that scope would be ok with the recoil from the 300. My opinion is that it will be ok but if its not going to stand up or will lose zero it doesn't do much good. What do you guys think?

i seen a guy at the range one day with a tasco varmint scope .it was the 6 to 24 power one .it seemed to hold zero on his 300 win mag.

Ya get what ya pay for..................cheap glass is cheap glass.....keep the cheapo scopes on low recoil guns...
 
IMO if that is your hunting rig then I would probably go with something a bit better. Weaver, Burris or Bushnell etc............ they all have some mid-ranged decent scopes.

You don't know that a scope has failed until you pull the trigger.

And agree with with longknife, you do get what you pay for.

This is a hunting rig. Not one I use too often though.
Most of my other hunting rifles have Burris fulleid II or similar.

I would go with a better quality scope with less magnification and fixed parallax.
 
You have to find this on a shooting range
It will hold zero in your house definitely
So go and shoot and see how is it

Tasco is coming off. It has a bit short eye relief too so I think it is better suited to a small caliber rifle. thanks for your opinions guys.
 
My shooting buddy uses a tasco 6-24X42 on his 300 WM Sendero. He has no issues.

That's right...$100 bucks. The reason? He does HOT loads. If the recoil does ruin the scope, it is only $100 bucks gone. Not a $1000 Leupold.
 
I highly doubt ANY hot load will break a leupold, since I have put several VX-1's on .300win mags, .338 win mag, and my .444 marlin. They are Leupolds cheapies, yet They will certainly not give up the ghost from recoil.
I had a tasco 6-24x42 varmint scope, and my .270 win blew that apart with factory stuff. (7 shots to wreck it, reticle visibly moved after each shot) My friend does have an older tasco 3-9x40 from Japan on his .300wm Savage, and it has held for at least 10 years so, My opinion is the Japanese ones were much better.

That is quite possibly the WORST argument I have ever heard for using cheap optics. That tasco will fall apart from recoil far before a decent scope. In fact heavy recoil is a justification for good optics. Not to mention the difference in recoil between a warm load and a hot load is minimal. Also, 300 WM recoil is actually quite mild when compared to other calibers that a decent scope will stand up to.

I think thats the same as opening the window and just tossing it out. My mom used to complain when I was a teen that "He just had to have the 150 dollar sneakers.......Spoiled brat",...................then , FOUR years later , I asked for another pair, and she said "I guess even moms can be wrong".
She realized that I actually saved her money in the long run. Rather than buying me 6 or 7 pairs of crappy 60 dollar shoes that wore out in 4 or 5 months, I bought one pair of good ones that lasted 4 years. Same can be said of scopes. If you plan on the scope being "disposable" , then spend your 100 bucks a year, miss your animal D/T reticle failure, and still end up buying the good one after wasting 5 or 6 hundred bucks on the cheap ones.

I've got a NCStar 6-24 on a 300 win. Fired about 400 shots, no problems. I've also got a Tasco (one of the cheap chinese ones) on a 308, it's been holding up fine as well. The thing with those scopes, is ya takes yer chances. So far, I'se been lucky.
