i am looking at these scopes for a 17 HMR i don't know allot about scopes i might also use a matching scope on a 308 savage for an advanatage of range estimation that the mil-dot has any tips or advice on these?

I would never buy a tasco, and if it is the banner 6-24 I found the cross hairs to be brutaly thick. The 6-18 has nicer crosshairs but no mil-dot. The hmr shoots really flat over it's effective range and then dies off really fast so a mil-dot is of little use.

Not to say mil-dots are useless I have one on my 204 a buddy has a Leopuld Varmint rectical and that works really well. He has just mounted it and we had it out over the weekend, we get out to one field and there is a crow on the opposid side of the field we knew the distance was ~300 yards, using a bi-pod he lays out and with the 300 yard tick dead on he pushes the crow off of the fence post and he did that shot twice.

You can also do ranging with regular multi-plex you just need to figure the distance between the heavy posts. and then figure out the distance for the Big Game you are hunting from there. It is not unusual to have 30" between the heavy posts and with a variable scope work out at what ranges would the different powers bracket a deer.
