taurus 1911

I don't know anything about the Taurus 1911.
But I do know how miserable it is trying to get any parts/service from Taurus when they go wrong..

If you want an inexpensive/reliable 1911 talk to Gunnar at Armco, He'll sell you a lightly modified Norinco backed with his own great warranty- you'll love it!

I am not looking for an inexpensive 1911. At $900.00 I can't say they are inexpensive.I was told [by a Taurus dealer] that they were outstanding 1911's but i wanted to hear from owners and shooters of this firearm.

I have a PT1911 and think it is fantastic for the money spent.
I'm pretty sure you can't build up a Norinco for the out of box cost of these things.
I would not be worried about service or parts supply; it is a 1911 afterall.

I didn't spend a few hundred more and glad I didn't; if you can handle one of each and decide for yourself! Spend the extra $ on grips, mags and a holster ;)

My problem is I can't handle both the Taurus and or Colt 1911's at the same time because in Quebec we are very limited to the retailers in our province. Most of our handgun dealers have gone belly up.

own a PT 1911S as well as a 24/7 .9mm, absolutely no probs. Although I don't have multi thousand rounds through either mind you, no reduced loads either, I don't think the Booeyman stories(Most perpetuated by 1911 snob #######s) hold much water. Go to some of the 1911 web sites and see for yourself. I know my next purchase will be another Taurus.

I guess I should have asked if the CGN faithfuls would pay $900.00 for a Taurus 1911 or spend the few hundred dollars for ex.[Colts Kimbers, Springfields]

I would (and did) go both ways.

While I have a warm place in my heart for the Colt and Kimber in my collection, the Taurus is a good buy, a good 1911, and you will not be doing yourself a disservice by purchasing one. If this is your first 1911, it would be a good choice).

I bought my Taurus and a Colt XSE on the same week at two different gun shops. The Stainless Steel Colt was $1300+/- while the Taurus was $760+/- (I had the 1911 bug that week after selling all but one of my 1911s a year earlier:redface:)
The All stainless steel version of the PT1911 retails in the neighborhood of $850-900, and has the same features as the phosphated steel one; per below:

PT1911 Features:
-front and rear slide cocking serrations
- full length guide rod
- Heinie 'straight eight' sights (both dovetailed)
- 30 lpi steel mainspring housing
- Ambi-safety
- 'memory groove' beavertail grip safety
- front strap and trigger guard checkering
- Aluminum Trigger (adjustable)
- Two 8 round Mecgar type mags

Items I do not care for:

- Hammer has a 'j lock' type key that you can lock the hammer from cocking - a form of gun safety device. While I haven't had issues with it yet, I will be replacing it with a skeletonized hammer eventually. Probably my biggest beef with it.
- Front strap checkering, while it does what is intended, the work is less than perfectly executed. This is fairly minor in my opinion, and I'm a believer that you get what you pay for. The fact this thing even comes with front strap checkering at all is a bonus.
- Plastic grips - Simple, functional -better than, but similar to the issued G.I. double diamond grips. Hardly an issue with me and most others I guess due to the customization people do with grips. Taurus has given you bare bones here, but hasn't charged for it either.

The Colt XSE has the same features with the following exceptions:

- Main spring housing is grey plastic - I changed mine out to an Ed Brown stainless one
- No front strap or trigger guard checkering (I find the trigger guard checkering useless, and am ok with 1911s without the front strap done)
- The grip safety is standard Colt - No high ride memory groove here. (I switched mine out for a Wilson Combat one)
- Colt marked Novak type sights (better imho than the straight eights)
- excellent quality Cocobolo wood double diamond grips
- High ride relief cut to underside of front strap and trigger guard
- Carry type thin and shortened ambi-safety levers.
- Front ejection port relief cut

Here are a couple of photos of my PT1911:
