I am thinking of getting a Tavor. I understand there is a 9mm conversion kit but I was told that it works only in the US made model. Is this true? If so is it possible to get a US made Tavor in Canada ?
Thanks
Rob

Here's my contribution:

Step 1: pick whether or not non-restricted status matters to you. No matter the way you slice it, if you are shooting the 9mm kit it is going to be a restricted firearm based on barrel length.

The US Tavor "SAR" 21 is automatically restricted here because of barrel length and can not be re-barreled at this time because no spare barrels have been made available by North Sylva, the importer.

TV-PressPass and myself have dicussed the 9mm kit and the differences between the US SAR vs the Canadian TAR model and other than the trigger pack we think the 9mm kit would fit, but no one knows for sure and someone just needs to be the guinea pig and order one through the likes of Irunguns and try it.

Initially it was thought the Israeli and US bolt carriers were way different, however the newer gen 2.5 Canadian Tavors have been sporting very similar bolt carriers and trigger packs.

One thing for sure is that our gen 2+ Tavors share the same pre-molded pin holes for the 9mm magwell conversion kit adapter as the US SAR.

Is shooting 9mm at a range only really that big of a deal?

It just so happens I have a 9mm kit on order.

Will let you know.

But don't expect an update for another 30 days or so.

Can anyone actually confirm for a fact that American made Sar 21 Tavors are currently in Canada? Chemist in another thread said even he was unsure and he had to check the FRT table. He never did reply with what he found. Everyone talks about importing them but I have never seen one at the range or even pictures of someone posting their American Tavor they got from Irunguns.

Hi, How do you know witch Tavor Gen you have ? My Tavor was purchase in 2012 from CanadaAmmo , at this time he was the only Tavor vendor.

Generation is determined by what type of rail is on the top of the Tavor for older models and for newer ones it is determined by the trigger pack.

To answer my question from above, I can confirm the American Tavor SAR21 does not have a FRT# yet for Canada as of last month.

Gen 1 has factory fixed Mepro. Canada Ammo was the importer.

Gen 1.5 had a short flat top rail and removeable mepro. Canada Ammo was the importer.

Gen 2 changed to a full length flat top rail. Imported by North Sylva.

Gen 2.5 is the same as a gen 2 for looks but has a new bolt carrier and trigger pack.

Somewhere part way through gen 2, Tavors started having roll pin holes put in the mag well area for holding the 9mm conversion magwell adapter in place.

Yes, if you have the holes in the magwell you should be able to install a 9mm conversion mag well in there.

But of course your barrel on the 9mm is restricted. Now if some ambitious soul could source some longer 9mm Tavor barrels . . .

That would be exciting.
