When I pull back the charging handle and lock the bolt open is it normal for the handle itself to still be able to slide around freely? Thanks.

what?
can you explain exactky what your problem is without using a video of someone shooting it suppressed?
if it became unhinged well thats what non reciprocating charging handles do

I've never had a non recip gun before so consider me totally new.

I pull the bolt back and it locks open. The handle at this point will slide freely back and forth until I release the bolt and it locks forward. I've all but gathered at this point this is normal? It seems strange to me it wouldn't stay in place but like I say, I'm new. If that's answered mods can punt this thread.

So when the rifle locks back under normal firing conditions, the spring on the front of your CH holds the CH locked forward so it doesn't bounce around. However when you use the CH to manually lock the action open it will be loose until you either force it to clip forward on the handgaurd or until you press the bolt release and let the action slam it home.

yes that is 100% normal operation for the mag change when the bolt locks back, charging handle will "float", but there is a tiny catch and spring in the front that keeps it from floating, of course it doesnt take much pressure to disengage that catch and voila your charging handle floats
soldiers dont carry a rifle with the bolt locked back

The charging handle is just a bar that pushes back on the bolt carrier. If the bolt locks the the rear on an empty mag, there is nothing to automatically push that bar forward again, or to hold it back, as it is not actually connected to the bolt carrier. You have to lock it forward yourself.

Yeah it's supposed to move back and forth when the bolt is locked back. It doesn't move with the bolt carrier, just pushes it to the rear
If it moved with the bolt, it would snap back and forth like on an AK or SCAR

Would recommend pushing the charging handle forward when it is floating. It will then stay in the forward position. Reduces wear/damage doing this rather than releasing the bolt catch and allowing it to slam forward with charging handle at various points. Same as you should for AR.

In actual use this won't be an issue. It only occurs when doing manipulations ie manually locking the bolt open. Again same as with AR rifles.

Also yes it is very normal. Just see above to prevent damage. Another suggestion is not to use the bolt release or only during mag changes. You can pull back on the charging handle to release the bolt instead. That way the charging handle and bolt go forward as one unit.
