Is it normal to only be able to dry fire a tavor with a snap cap or empty casing? I feel silly asking as it's my second I've owned after losing the last to a housefire but I don't recall and Google seems to indicate that others can dry fire without something in the chamber. With an empty chamber the trigger just travels a bit farther than on safe with no hammer strike. Seems to function fine with a fired casing inserted...

Hell dude, you can dry fire your tavor with an empty chamber until the cows come home. It's not gonna hurt it. It's a military spec rifle......it's designed to be able to withstand dry fires. I dry fire mine all the time.

I click all my centerfire guns with nothing in the chamber all the time! Doesn't harm them. I don't make a habit of doing it 100s of times, mind you! I usually do it after a shooting session or after a cleaning session before I return the guns to the safe.
I won't do it with rimfires myself although many here will tell you, and I agree, that some modern rimfires can be dry fired without problems.

What does the manual say and do the fired cases have odd firing pin marks? Seems bizarre that it won't go off without something in the chamber, after all every military in the world trains soldiers with dry-firing.
Only thing I can think off is completely disassemble the bolt and see if anything looks out of place or take it to a smith.

Did you let the bolt slam forward all the way? If you ease it forward, the gun doesn't go into battery and won't shoot. Same thing if you baby a live round.

ohhh yah, didnt think of that, yah you gotta let that handle go, dont ride it, otherwise yes you cant fire it.
Ya that's definitely not normal. Mine dry fires with or without anything in it. Take it back ASAP for a replacement or a refund. I'm sure it's something that is probably an easy fix but why bother mucking around with a brand new gun while running the chance of possibly damaging it.

Same. Drag the charging handle back and just let her fly , even on an empty chamber.
This, I found that even if the CH pulled back even a little bit it won't dry fire. Like when it's unclicked from that forward notch.

Agreed....stupid question, but you are trying with a mag out, safety off and your running the charging handle after pressing the trigger???
Sorry man just gotta ask the obvious
EDIT: yes never baby the charging handle when you manually work it. You gotta work it just like the rifle does when it fires
