Tavor failure to feed?

Gents,

I'm trying to trouble a sporadic issue with a tavor. Mostly when shooting on a rest the round will not feed. It looks like when going back the bolt presses on the round in the mag and it flips up at about a 30 degree angle and on its way back forward the bolt wedges it and it doesn't feed.

I've tried multiple mags.

Any ideas ?

I've noticed that I can easily replicate if I cycle the action slowly. When I chamber a round quickly the round mainly stays in the mag until the boit goes forward to chamber it.

So far, from a rest I will get that happening about 4% of the time with various ammo but not once while shooting standing so far.

I mostly use LAR 10'round mags. I'm hoping that I'm somehow resting on the mag or putting some weird pressure on it and thats why it doesn't happen when standing.

I did a takedown this morning and everything looks fine.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had any similar issues.

If you are using the mag as a rest at the back that could very well cause the problems you are having.

I used a mag as a rest with my Tavor, and it worked fine, I was surprised.
Which mags are you using?

I found that the 1st and 2nd gen pmags had issues like this, but the 3rd gen pmags worked great.

I'm using the original lar 10 rounders. I think they were cproducts.

This rifle was abused a little before I got it so who knows what was done to it.

Just before we move away from the mags, please be sure the back of the mags are U-Shaped and not V-shaped.

The Gen3 Pmags are U-Shaped but G2 are V-Shaped so need to be filed down.

Yep. All u shaped.

It's almost like the mag sits to high inside and the bolt pulls and rubs on the round in the mag when it cycles. If I pull slowly back on the bolt the top round pops out of the mag sometimes.

I've rested my Tavor on the mag all the time. No problems at all.

Try a D&H mag or one with an anti tilt follower in it. There have been reports of LAR mags and some rifles not being as reliable but we generally don't care because they hold 10 rounds. If you shoot a regular mag with a decent anti til follower and you have the same issues then it's something in the gun. Maybe the guy before used a mag that caused the bolt hold open issues/bolt damage before you got the rifle.

also be careful how you are loading the mags. Being careless with this can induce problems.

Thank. I got a collection of mags and some anti tilt flowers from brownells in a box somewhere.

Ill do some test since I also have a d&h in the collection too.

Ok guys here are a few pics.

Here's a visual of the issue. It's a left hand bolt so it's in reverse and the snap cap is red.

Here are a few mags. The mag body is also of a different finish (one shiny and one the usual gun metal grey). I've been using the shiny ones. The one on the left is the one causing issues. I haven't tried the grey ones yet since they were in reserve.

The one you haven't tried yet look like a Magpul Gen3 Anti tilt follower. IE the same ones that come with the D&H mags that I have. The light grey one looks like a C more mag follower.

Keep in mind we're just guessing here. You'll have to do some testing yourself. If you find it is mag related and not firearm related then you have a couple options. You can simply not use that mag or try and locate the problem. The two most common problems are a weak spring which the anti tilt followers do help with a bit and bent feed lips or the feed lips being out of spec. You can mix/match until you find the problem then replace the problem part and your 10 round Lar mag should work fine again without having to buy a new mag. Takes a bit of time but cheaper and it's good to rule out what's causing the problems.

Also when you have some mags you can always rely on, get a label maker and mark your mags. About 8 of them or so. Make those few specific to that firearm. An example of a marking system: E-1, E-2, etc. Use a marking system so you know they're yours (stops them from being accidentally grabbed by others) and allows you to keep track of them. If one encounters any issues then out it goes and either problem solve it or redirect it for target shooting practice only. Replace it with one you can count on and again label it.

Mine is doing same but from standing. I was told to lube the supreme piss out of it and let the rifle break in...I don't buy it, I think its something else. Problem happens with Rob Arms pistol mags. It will jam the bullet into the casing. Maybe my problem is different than yours.
