Has anyone thought of doing some mods to their Tavor (Tar-21) rifle?

IE: flutting the barrel, adding a new flash hider, bipods, fancy rifle scope, aim point and or adding a 3 X magnifying module, Eotech, cool lights/lasers, mars optics, getting the barrel cut just to the legal limit, porting?

I have been thinking of getting the barrel fluted to cut some of the weight, out of the already light gun. I have also been thinking of getting the barrel cut down to just the legal limit. (if it already isn't, never checked.)

Has anyone found, or does anyone make a rail big enough to support an Aim point with the 3 X magnifying module?

Post some pictures of what everyone has done to their rifles.

Hi Justin, did you ever pick up a Dlask rail? I'm trying to find the time to design a cantilever adapter that latches on to the Dlask Tavor rail and swing it around the BUIS to support a 3X magnifier. Please post a pic of your Tavor if did anything to it.

No, I have not picked up a Dlask one. I have read that some people needed to mod a $3,000 gun to fit a rail that was supposedly made for the gun.
I have no first hand knowledge of this issue so i'll keep in mind to take that info with a grain of salt. Many regard Joe as a good competent gun smith that takes on challenges, i'll stick with that in till i'm shown otherwise.

I would be so happy if you made cantilever adapter for the Tavor, I love the idea. I would really like to put an Eotech 553 on my Tavor, but i'm having problems finding that model in BC at this time. If I can't have the magnifying module, I would go with an Eotech any day - I prefer them personally as a stand alone unit.

I haven't really done much to my Tavor yet, I have been waiting for better options in rails to add a good optic to it.

I have only added a Surefire M951-XM07(hooked up to the button on my handgaurd), a Spector 3 point tac sling with the bungee cord in it, a phantom flash hider, I also have all my mags coupled (that hardly has anything to do with the rifle though.)

I'm interested in getting it fluted, maybe even getting the barrel chopped to the legal limit.

I've been thinking about making a long rail that extends out the front and interfaces with the front sight mount. If I can get the gas block with out the rear sight mount I'd extend it out the back too, basically making a flat top Tavor. Then I could use decent flip up sights and Eotech with magnafier.

That's pretty far down the list of projects though. I'll probably just end up buying a base off some one or making a regular one for an Eotech.

I put a short dot in a larue 1.5 spr mount on mine. The rail I made is 5mm higher than the dlask so a magnifier will clear the rear sight base.
As for the barrel it is 480mm or 18.9in so you only get 10mm,fluting an all ready light barrel is a may or may not work idea.
I have lots of ideas for mods but they are costly to start and it is sill a small market.

I would definitely speak to a competent gunsmith before I just decided to go off and do something to any firearm. Thank you for the advice though 999.
To my understanding your the man who made the rail CanAM is selling, and have heard good things about it.
Are you able to talk a little bit about the mods you are thinking about? I'm interested because, i'm curious if I should hold out or not on getting one of the rails that are available today. Perhaps a different setup altogether, like a flat top rail like "ArmedSask" mentioned.

TYC147 - Who's rail is that? I like your setup, but it doesn't allow you to use your backup sights, just in case.

I am using the Dlask rail, and EoTech 552. It co-witnesses great!
I am happy with Joe's installation. It was done while I waited. No charge.

Updated pic added.

The Surefire switch is very convenient to my hands when in position.

Hi Justin, I have the Dlask rail on my Tavor. The back up sight aligns with the Eotech and Aimpoint sights. You can take a good look at it in Dlask's website. The Tavor you see on his site is mine. I currently have the Aimpoint Comp M4 on mine and I love it.

Thank you Thomas. I like the Dlask rail, but I want to be able to but the Mag device on my tavor as well. The Dlask rail does not have enough room for it.

I was hoping 999 or Dlask was making a rail that would accept both. I guess i'm stuck with just putting a Comp4 on mine. :(

Sorry for not geting back to the thread sooner. The iron sights will be a lower third co-witness and I did try a new aimpoint M4 as well.

I had a chance to see the 999 rail yesterday. My Tavor has the Dlask. Now that I see them directly compared, I like the 999 better. It co-witnesses just fine with my Comp M4, and it's high enough to mount telescopic sights as well.

My $0.02

How did you hook up your light to the forearm button?

1) Take off your handgaurd (allen key needed)
2) Make a small hole for your tail wire to fit through.
3) put the remote switch inside the botton slot.
4) close it up.

It will look like this.

Enjoy!

For a cantilevered mount, the Swan mounts from ARMS work great (h tt p://ww w.armsmounts.com/default.asp?mode=products&sub=mounts&id=[hsh]36%20EX ). Yes, they ship to Canada....Chop of the back inch +/- of the mount, and it'll slide right on the 999 rail. Raises the mount height just enough to clear the back site with a 5 pwr mag behind an Eotech. A standard mag mount (for Aimpoint) will sit just a bit low W/O the extra height of the Swan, so the optic binds on the rear site, with a twist off mount. The Larue Eotech mag mount sits higher, so should clear, W/O the additional height. Problem then becomes space on the rail, which the Swan adds quite handily.

No co witness with this set up.
The above is for the 999 mount. Haven't tried the Dlask, and won't, until I get my second Tavor..:p
