With the Tavor for sale in canada as an unrestricted rifle, which I've heard is not restricted for hunting.. I have to ask: What would this be suitable for hunting with 5.56 nato rounds?

I ask because it specifically states in canadaammo.com, it can be used hunting.

I think it'd be neat if I had that kind of $$$ to buy.

Edit: Also, this post is not meant to tease either, I truly would like to know if it is feasible, and if so what sort of game would it be good for?

Depending which province you reside in, or in which province you intend to hunt, there might be restrictions against shooting big game with a .22 centerfire. When handloaded with good bullets, game including deer, black bear, caribou, and seals have been taken with the 5.56/.223. While I don't approve of the use of small bores for use on big game, I cannot deny that they have been used successfully.

Well how about this then...

Can Am can send me a Tavor and a box of Barnes TSX Bullets to reload into some nice hunting rounds and I'll try it out on Vancouver Island Deer and Grouse.

I'll take pics of the Tavor on the killed critters...

Of course I'll get to keep the Tavor after the season. :D

:welcome:

OmG! LOL! In Alberta minimum big game caliber is 23, so you could only use it on coyote, wolf, etc. I thought this would be a real fun gun to rechamber in 6 x 45 MM making it legal to hunt big game. (Basically a 223 casing necked up to accept 6 mm bullets).

Better yet re chamber it in 6.5x55 Swede.

No differance in overall length vs a standard 223 or 5.56 round. The 6x45 will run through any stock AR chambered to accept the round. If it fit's the AR it will fit the Tavor. A couple side by side pictures here. http://www.ar15armory.com/forums/6x45-Shooters-t48703.html Good for deer out to 100 - 150 yards.

so you've spent nearly $4000 on a rifle that does the same job as a $500 .357 lever gun.... or a $800 Mini-30

Mmmmm

Anything not considered "big game" (bear, deer, moose etc...) should easily fall within the capability of the Tavor's 5.56/223 round at the rifle's effective range (I'd say about 200 ish yards with the standard sight setup or something like an Eotech).

I had the opportunity to send 60 rounds downrange with one today and all I can say is WOW !

If your only goal is the end job accomplished then you are 100% correct. I have a Remington 700 SA chambered in 243 that cost me less than $400 new and has killed many deer, 3 Elk and 5 or 6 Moose. A Chevette will get you from a - b, but you have to admin it's not as fun to drive from a - b in a chevette as it would be in a corvette. I have an airplane that costs more in fuel per mile traveled than my F350 diesel, but that does not stop me from flying. Sometimes it's just the fun factor that makes you want to do something. ;)

hey, your money. the people that would rebarrel a Tavor to go deer hunting are the same people that buy a corvette and lift it so they can go play in the mud. will never make sense to me.

an F350 and a plane. you work on the rigs eh? (ah memories of whitecourt ;) )

the crown still have a stellar wing night and cute servers?

Sorry no rig worker here. I own my own company, but I do work a lot in the bush. The crown still has great wings and the waitresses look better every year older I get. I don't have a Tavor, but my brother does. I have fired it and it's OK, but I would personally use it alot more than he does if it were chambered in 23 caliber. It's non-restricted, why leave it in the safe and only take it to the range? I think it would make a fantastic gun to pack around in the truck on a daily basis for those wolf encounters or a little after work walk through the bush looking for a whitetail. It's nice and short so it's quite easy to get out of the truck in a hurry. Too bad someone in Canada does not make barrels for the Tavor.
