Tavor Vs Type-97

I love both the Tavor and the T97.

I seriously love my T97 for its' simplicity and the easy to use irons.
More accurate than I might be capable of.
I am tempted to get another just to convert to FTU.

As for getting parts from China?
Seriously???
Even if my norc SKS broke down, it is esier to replace than to fix. That is the sino-norm.

Exactly, they're both disposable rifles except one of them is $1000.
 
Some guns are disposables but are priced like keepers because of their classification in Canada...the SU-16, for example.

True, but even the Su-16 has warranty and parts support. It may take a while to get it fixed but it will eventually be taken care of so even though it's a crappy rifle (just my opinion of it) it isn't really disposable.

If you are the original owner, yes...there is warranty "support". But if you happen to be one of the many who bought it from the EE at pretty much retail prices...good luck getting parts to fix your broken SU-16 even if you offer to pay for it. Kel-Tec might be willing, but nobody wants to help get the parts across the border, and Vault certainly won't lift a finger to give you a helping hand.

I've had a few opportunities to purchase Kel-Tec since my SU-16 broke...firearms that I thought were interesting. But after my experience...never again!
 
I read an internet article, it stated that the Chinese government is paying 4300 yuan ( $690 USD ) for the type 95 rifle. Not sure it is a price including optics or magazines, or an averaged out figure including spare parts. Yes, capitalism is alive in China even for state enterprises.

Well, the US government was paying 650 USD for a plain jane M16 before early-mid 2000, before colt negotiated the price of the M4 to 1000 USD.

I will not called Type 95 a "disposable" rifle, as least the Chinese government does not see it that way for the money .

Maybe. But I'm gonna bet it's a lot easier for the Chinese govt to get parts than a Canadian retail customer to do so.

Strange about not being able to get parts for the T97, since there was a thread awhile ago about some one who misplaced the bolt and was able to get a replacement from the distributor!
 
Even if there no replacement parts, all those broken down Type 97 people keep talking about should be all over the place to pick parts from.:rolleyes:

I tell yea what. If someone has a broken T97 and you want to *dispose* of it. I'll buy it from yea for $50 a rifle. I'll even pay for your shipping costs.

I see a lot of "the rifle is only worth getting if it has parts availability". Has anyone ever had a T97 break on them? I have never heard of it. If a rifle is built right it shouldn't need parts replacing until 20,000 rounds, and by then the rifle's cost is miniscule compared to the ammo cost.

Everyone has their own opinion, just let the T97 folk enjoy the T97 and the Tavor folk enjoy their Tavor. In the end they are both cool rifles, one is just more affordable to the average joe than the other and thus may not have as much to offer as far as what the mall ninjas want out of a rifle. Just my .02c.
 
I had the firing mechanism on my T97 changed out by the retailer. Where they got the part from isn't my problem, the point is that I was able to get parts.
Shear a pin? It's almost easier to make a new one. I'm waiting coming up 3 months for a castle nut for my Remington 870. If I had known it was going to be this long, I would have simply made one.

Really, what can break on a T97 that would cause it to be unusable? There aren't a lot of parts that go into a T97 already. It truly is a simple design.

My brother and I swap back and forth between our T97 and Tavor. Both are great rifles for their own reasons, and hopefully people won't forget this fact after reading this thread. It truly went full retard for a while there.

Exactly what I was thinking,haven't heard of anyone needing any replacement parts for the T97.
 
The only thing I don't care for in my T97 is the free-float firing pin. I hate seeing marks on unfired primers after cycling. It bothers me.

Hopefully someone will offer an aftermarket spring like with the SKS.

Wow, my thread has really taken off on me lol.

Glad to see so many points of view. So I decided I was going to go to Reliable and try to pick up the Tavor for $2300 but missed, couldn't get in. Now the site doesn't even have the gun at full price which I assume means they sold out and won't be getting stock again for a while. So I guess I need to keep hunting for good deals on the Tavor online. Any deals spotted out there?

The T97 is still intriguing but I don't like the sounds of the "disposable gun" comments. Tavor is sounding preferable. Total money spent isn't really the issue, but value for product is always important.

I took a T-97 in a trade and was surprised at the quality. The placement of the mag release is awkward and it is not as accurate as some AR-15s that I've owned ...but for the price it is a decent firearm. Don't let them put you off trying one.
 
Easy - go handle both if you can and see which one feels better for you. I personally don't think the T97 is on the same level as the Tavor in terms of craftsmanship or quality, but whether that's worth the extra money is up to you.
