Tavor vs XCR-L

Pros and Cons as I see it:

TAVOR
Pros
- battle proven
- shorter overall length

Cons
- not sure I love the look
- polymer frame
- trigger needs to be upgraded

XCR-L
Pros
- traditional layout
- metal frame

Cons
- longer overall length
- higher cost?
- not a battle proven design

Another questions is about the XCR barrels. Would a Tavor barrel be closer in profile to the XCR heavy or thin or somewhere in between?

Thoughts? Experience?

I think you need to differentiate subjective and objective pros and cons first... or at least recognize them.

Ex:
Tavor/x95 objective pro: shorter OAL
Tavor/x95 subjective con: "not sure about the look"

XCR objective pro: can be much lighter weight.

etc

Also, how is a polymer frame a con? How is a metal frame a pro? Also not sure where you're going with the 'battle proven' stuff... in terms of reliability?

FWIW my experience with my x95, the biggest cons, both subjective and objective are cost, 'loose trigger', weight, exhaust gasses in face. Biggest pro: Short OAL.

The loose trigger can be fixed/mitigated by upgrade, the weight is mostly in the back, so effects are different than when it's front heavy, exhaust in the face: you can buy a gasket for the closed off port, or control your breathing I guess :)

If you consider that the the price, accuracy are the same between an AR looking platform and a Tavor, it boils down to the look and feel.

The bullpup path is different that others I think... I've got my x95, and will probably never sell it, unless it's to buy a newer gen tavor/x95/etc; but I will always have one from now on :)

I also noticed that you're in Ottawa... If you havent had the chance to dry handle an x95 (or BCL102 for that matter) we can meet up so you can try them ;)

I have an xcr-l with .223, and 7.62x39 conversions. That to me was a cool thing about the rifle. The .223 is the newest to me and came with the Wylde chambering, a nice option for me as I have a fair amount of mil surp .556. It shoots plenty accurate.

I've never shot a Tavor, but do own a t97 and have shot a Styer AUG (in the states) so I'm not bulpup adverse. Bulpups are definately fast pointing and a smaller package.

I preordered a macdef set... can't wait to try that one out. If its good, I'm getting rid of all my AR15 uppers/lowers (well maybe keep one, just in case the law changes ;) )

I got an MV, but I’m so tempted to get an AR 15, I don’t know why, but I really want a Colt:)

Xcr unless you’re hell bent on a bullpup. I have a new xcr in 223/x39. Good trigger, accurate, relatively light, and the best ergonomics. I have not had a single issue in 700 rounds of x39 and 1k of norc 223.

Battle proven is a misleading term. Just because it's been used in battle doesn't mean it's great. I've heard many reports of the $3000.00 gun not being all that reliable.

since they came out (tavors)i had approx 6+ of these through my hands(new/used/stock/modified)---not once had a failure in its function---in my 20 yrs plus of gun ownership the reliability of these is top shelf---cant speak of operator error but that's the only other reason for any bad feedback regarding function i can see.Unless i was very very lucky( in doubt).

Maybe. It needs to be taken in context. But it's a data point. I've owned a Tar-21 and never had an issue. Owned an XCR with issues. Then I bought a X95 and again....no issues.

Anecdotal. Yes. Reliability? In this small scale experience is that tavor wins out.

Of the two you're looking at, nothing wrong with either - really more personal preference. I have both and they are very different rifles. If you go XCR, go keymod with a light or medium barrel, as others have stated. I'd suggest trying both first. Buddy of mine tried a bunch of my guns last month and decided he really wants a Tavor.

If you're open to other options, the new MacDef may be worth waiting for.... though it could be awesome, or could suck, as it's not available yet and nobody knows for sure what the QC is going to be like on the production guns.

Why do you keep recommending that anchor???

Ha ha ha

And then there would be my recommendation - buy a restricted ACR on the EE, with a polymer handguard, and have it converted to NR with a light or medium-profile barrel. It is anything BUT an anchor when set up properly.

This. Problem is, most of them come from factory as anchors, the ACR DMR being the biggest offender. That said, with the correct barrel, handguard, and stock they can be very manageable.

Adding an additional 9" of barrel will be 1lb more at most.

Just like AR's, there is a right way and a wrong way to set them up. Difference is most AR's are decent from the start, where as most ACR's are as bad as they can get from the start.

Anchor ? mine is under 8lbs And will be even lighter once I get my 10.5 inch barrel.

Once fully kitted out its a 9.7 lbs, and when I train I never think to myself I wish my ACR was lighter...lol.. I just hate the 18.5 inch barrel more and more as it gets in the way of barricades and hits me in the balls when i transition...

But as a NR option the ACR is my top choice. X95 2nd.

Yes the Maccabee Defense will be awesome and I cant wait to get mine :)

Seriously guys, he’s looking for an NR black rifle.

So 18.5 barrel

The XCR and ACR is 9 lbs dry?
Add a loaded mag and a good optic, sling, and whatever, you’re pushing 12 lbs.

It’s all good if your shooting off the bench or with a bi-pod.
But offhand, it’s not so hot.

To me, NR means in the bush, so you’ll likely be shooting offhand.

I’m a healthy 190 lbs, and shooting my 12 lb XCR, offhand was no fun.

What the hell did you have on your XCR? My ACR has a heavy 18.5" barrel, and even loaded with Elcan, Peq-15, and Scout light it wasnt that much!!!
