hey guys, i shot two nice goldeneyes (a drake and a hen) this season and i want to get them mounted, i have never done it before and know nothing about it. My friend told me it would cost about 100-150$ a bird.....apon phoning different places in calgary it looks like alot of places are asking around 500$ a duck. that sounds really high to me but i have no experience in this area. any comments or suggestions. anyone know a good place in calgary?

$500.00 a duck! That sounds way to high to me. I would check around a few places before paying that!

Dave.

I did it my self, I had absolutely no experience, I was very suprised by the results. (Positively that is!) Try it on a "scrap" duck first.

Alex

Yep...the 200$ mark is pretty much it here too (in Qc). When you shop around , an item that can make the diff in pricing is the set-up... under glass with fake ice and snow and such fancy things will cost you. In flight with a nice piece of drift wood (wall contact) would be very nice and less expensive.

I used to do ducks wayyyy back in high school (it financed my hunting equipment back then). Ducks are easy to mount... just takes some practice.

My father has been a taxidermist for over 45 years. He has had people tell him, his price of $80 for a duck is too expensive.
Time to jack up the prices I guess.

Check out taxidermy.net and try do one yourself. I have not done one but did a dear head myself useing this forum and it worked out great. Alot of good info there.

We have an excellent taxidernmist here on PEI, been doing it since '64. He does alot of out of province mounts. $75 per duck is the going rate unless you want a "flying" mount.
If you prepay he cuts you a break as well.
I can get a number if you wish.

Sorry guys but I have to edit the price my father charges. He charges $100 per duck, flying or standing.
I have been out of touch with his prices, as he does do my stuff for free (or at least at cost for big stuff like bear rugs and moose antlers):D

can i hijack the thread for a min:redface:
those of you that know a taxidermist...can you ask them how to clean the feathers of a stuffed bird...its mostly nicotine stains/dust/and what ever else floats in the toronto air..
thanks
Don

Fogducker,
Just use a damp (not wet) cloth and go with the grain. General up-keep with a feather duster on dusting days will work (about twice a year around here)
Ya, I can be as brave as hell with that statement, wife does not read CGN:D

Heh, that reminds me of the wood duck that my grandfather had mounted back in the 50's. I always remember it being there on the wall, but it got so dirty and foul looking after 50 years, that my grandmother stuffed it in the wood stove a few years back when he was not looking...

I guess 50 years aint bad for a mount!

Thge guy who does my mounts told me to just jently run my hand over the mount when it gets dusty, much like petting your dog or cat or duck for that matter.
Just don't get aggressive like petting your girlfriend/wife.
