Anyways I got my buck back, and I think I have a few issues with my mount. but am unsure if I'm just being "picky" as I don't know what to expect in a taxidermy mount.

Either way he looks great in my living room.

I however found a few nuances on my mount that bugged me a bit, which the taxidermist put the blame on the drying process?

I can see the stitches/where the head is stitched up on the top of the mount, if I slightly move the hair I can see the stitches, as well as some putty on the hair near the antlers.

There is a small hole where the eye was done with putty

The nose/mouth area are obviously putty with no attention to detail?

There is a gap where the mount meet the antlers.

Now is this poor taxidermy? Or is it just me being picky as heck?

Either way you guys be the judge and tell me if im being to OCD over this ;)

He put the blame on the drying process? That would sound like more inexperience on his part? After looking at the pictures it looks like a rookie job was done, I wouldn't have paid for it! I sure hope you didn't pay much to get it done!

EmailI sent: without names. I also never sent pics to him.

It is hard to control the shrinkage on some mounts, and yes sometimes we cannot control the amount of shrinkage that happens around the eyes and seams. It has been dry for some time now, and should be completely hardened.

Hey just did a quick once over on the mount all looks good except for two spots was just wondering about. (sorry I really hate to complain haha)

Should I be able to see the seam/sewing on the top of the head?

There is also a small hole where the putty around done of the eyes is there anyway I'd be able to fix/fill that in (can send pics if need be)

Not sure If I'm being to critical as this is my first mount.

Thanks!

I'd ask him to fix it on his dime, he should if he wants his business to keep a good name! Even where he sprayed some colour onto the deers lips makes it looks like the joker from batman. And putty stuck in the hair?! Talk about unprofessional! The parted hair where the stitching is looks ghastly as well. Does he have helpers or an apprentice that he lets do the work and he didn't look over mount for quality control after?

Here's some pictures of what some of those details should look like in my opinion. Blaming the drying process has got to be the lamest excuse I've ever heard!

I would go see him and take the pictures Chisholm posted to show him what a good job looks like.

I would not be very happy either. No you are not being OCD. It's terrible.

You took the shaft..... Dry.

Not to mention he prolly didnt even get a kiss either.

In the car show circle they would call that a 20 footer...looks good from 20 feet away.

You suggest you are happy , but there is an underlying issue you are not happy with.
$600.00 is a tad steep to not be happy with what you have, No ?

The drying process has nothing to do with the stitching showing unless of course it was still wet when it was sewn.

Hmm, a four month turn around time????
There are some bells sounding and getting louder....

I am hardly an expert on this topic, but have seen enough good amateur jobs to suggest this is just that a quick turn around to get the job done and job paid.

What to do you ask, start with contacting the guy in person with your mount and the pictures of a good mount and then ask for some of your money back.
Next would be contacting the CC company assuming you paid with a CC for a refund on the work and failing that....

Ask him how this mount would be judged at a taxidermy competition. There are many categories that are judged, novice, intermediate and masters.
It would be interesting to see how he thinks this would rate even if it was judged in the novice category. I don't think it would be bringing home any ribbons.

That's an interesting idea. If he thinks it would win the novice class tell him you are willing to pay the novice rate...

I get that $600 is a lot of money for most of us, but that's actually pretty "cheap" for a head mount.

That would have led me to do quite a bit more investigation in the first place - like go out and see some of his work instead of taking the word of someone on the internet who "heard from a buddy who has this friend".

A well mounted whitetail (head) might run you 800 to 1200 bucks - and on the higher end if the guy doing it is "actually acclaimed".

Sounds like you paid for someone who is still learning and he practiced on your mount.
