Found myself up on the north side tonite and stopped in at Wholesale Sports. Picked up a couple reloading items and some bullets...but I never leave without fondling a couple new rifles....checked out the TC Icon in 300 Winny.....I'm glad I didn't order one from SIR.....the hinge on the floorplate is poorly done IMHO...it sits on the outside of the trap door like an old farm house screen door hinge....the latch is pretty cheesy too....very small, hard to move....this is one situation where I'd take the detachable mag over the floorplate....even a plastic mag....

anyone else check them out?

now....I did handle a Sako 85 Bavarian in 300WSM....now there's a rifle a guy could like....

I haven't looked at the Classic yet but all the other Icons do have a removeable clip.

yes, I realize the short actions have a detachable mag like I was referring to....there was a stainless one on the counter that I had a quick look at....actually I was trying to see if a guy could machine off those goofy looking Weaver bases and drill and tap it....

Ya, no doubt that a couple flimsy screws holding a mount on a barrel are far better than a mount machined integral to the barrel!

I asume you mean integral to the reciever but your ring options are severely limited with Weaver style bases....

Somewhat limited, but the Burris Signature Zee rings are nice ones, as far as weaver style goes...

I use Leupold rings on mine...they fit tight to the base and utilize four screws to hold down each ring. I have also tried Burris, but they secure the rings with only two screws and take a much narrower hold on the base.
What is the wood quality like on the long action?

the wood was OK,..not outstanding by any stretch...

The odd shaped trigger guard and the floorplate hinge and latch was enough to turn me off.

Think I'll stop over at Phoenix and check out the Kimbers.....again...

I looked at one of these today it was the stainless steel synthetic stocked model with a detachable mag.

The bolt locking lugs are a very nice strong looking classic 3 lug design exactly like my German made Voerre actions.

I actually liked the plastic mag a lot and and was very impressed with the trigger and let off of the trigger around 3lbs would be my guess and no creep.

Unlike others here I really liked the integral scope bases wish all my rifles had that design.

I went away very impressed.

Killed my first deer with mine last week and other than I should not be allowed to own a wood stock, the rifle performed incredibly well. I too love the integral scope mounts and the bolt is bulletproof. The three position safety is a nice idea too! They all seem to be shooters from what I've seen and had no hesitation taking a 279 yard shot with it.

what caliber did you get?

i HAVE A 30/tc IN THE CLASSIC AND A 308 WIN IN THE SYNTHETIC, both are real shooters, Sorry about the caps, stupid laptop!

We had a demo at the shop in 243 and i thought it came with pretty nice wood, but the price tag was right around $1000.00, I think the Kimbers at 1100.00 would be a better buy. FS

unless you want a three lug bolt and a detachable mag.....I did, that's why I went with a previously owned but NIB Sako 85 Hunter....more money but the better of the three IMHO.

If you must have controlled feed and a three position safety then the Kimber wins....if you want a detachable mag but not a plastic one, then the Sako wins.

I think between the three it depends on the features you consider important to you

I'm a fan of integral bases. WIththe Icon you have more adjustment ability and more choice of rings than you do with a Sako or (my favorite system) the Ruger.

Now to justify a reason to buy one I am basically covered for all of the standard calibers from .17 to .375 and even though I am a T/C fan the new 30TC does absolutely nothing for me that is unless someone gave it to me hoping I would promote it.

Now if I was just starting out the Icon would definately be on my wish list it is a well thought out platform.

Gotta run heading out predator hunting for the week going try my new to me 223 Rem 21" tapered barrel on my T/C Contender carbine that is giving me 1 1/2" X 1/2" 3 shot groups @ 200 yards with my 50gr Sierra Blitz reloads.

:)

It's yet another .30-06 ballistic clone......great all round calibre for North America...nothing more....nothing less.
