I had a Pro hunter barrel in 308 Marlin Express that I thought needed a little more commie class. So off it went to
Ellwood Epps for a rechamber to 7.62X54r.....I guess with the .308 tube it is closer to a 7.62X53r...but hey, you say potato I say tomoto.
Can't wait to take it out and see how it shoots...

Russ...

Yes, I'll post on how it shoots. I just have to decide on a bullet. I have 150gr. and 180gr. winchester silver tips (the old ones) or maybe 165gr.SST's
With the .308" bullet I have endless choices. Just have to get to town and get a base and some rings.

I see they free handed the new chambering stamping and X- ed the old caliber out rather crudely .Great idea doing the 7.62x54R but I wouldn't be too thrilled with the cosmetics. Not much you can do about it now I guess except see if it shoots.

The new caliber looks acceptable. Not great, but you get what you pay for and I wouldn't pay extra for nicer lettering on a relatively cheap item... But that ### over the old cal looks pretty bad...

For the price I wasn't expecting laser engraving with gold inlay. This is a utility rifle not a show rifle. It's not going to kill deer any deader than the 308 marlin.
I just wanted something different.

How's this?

I had a 8X63 Swede done by Ron Smith and all he did was stamp the new cal. above the 30/60 factor stamping. Didn't ### it out at all.
That barrel shoots very well.

Got the 7.62Russ. decked out....Went weaver base, Med. steel rings, and a Weaver 3-10X40 Grand Slam scope.
I tried a couple loads I conjured up....150 gr. FMJBT, 50grs. 44N powder (you won't find this powder) Norma brass....3 shot 2962fps 2967fps 2965fps
At 50 yards two bullet cut each other with the last 1/2" off....I did this for both 3 shot strings.

The second load was 150gr. FMJBT, 49.5grs 44N, Norma brass....the picture is posted.
the two patched holes were the sighters.
