Having some trouble finding a load for my recently aquired TC White Mountain Carbine (1/21 twist bbl).This is a beautiful little gun with a brite bore. I have tried my old standby load of 90 grn Pyrodex RS behind a knight high pressure saboted Hor 240 XTP with no luck. This load shoots well in all my other muzzleloaders.I will admit I have not tried working up a load with pyrodex as my main focus is (or was) to find a load using 777 with a Hor 240 and cast 340 grn .44 cal saboted bullets. I have tried 60, 70, 80 & 90 grns with both bullets with poor results (4-6" groups @ 100).
I have heard these guns are a little tempermental, especially when using sabots:eek: . I have also been told these guns were designed to shoot the TC Maxi's and shooting anything else is a fruitless endeavor:runaway: .
I know 777 can be tempermental in sidelocks due to lower flame temperatures so I installed a hotshot nipple and use mag caps. To date I have not had an ingition problem.
If anyone has one of these rifles and has found a good shooting load - whether it be with BP, Pyrodex, 777, Maxi's, Sabots or what have you please let me know:dancingbanana: Hunting season is fast approaching and I would really like to give this little bugger a try.
Any other input regaurding this rifle would also be greatly appreciated
 
I shoot Buffalo Bullets (385 gr hollow point hollow base) with 90 grains of FFg powder. Accuracy is good and it hits hard. I forgot mention that my rifle is also a White Mountain Carbine .50 cal cap lock. I had no luck with any sabot rounds in this rifle. It also shot patched round balls well too. They were shot with a 70 grain charge of FFG.

Just got into black powder a few months ago and I am slowly learning that the $25 I spent on Hornady sabot bullets could have been better spent. at 50 yards they are all over the place, minies on the other hand are deadly accurate.
 
I have been shooting a TC WMC for about 10 years now.
Sure is a handy little bush rifle.

I have taken deer out to 130 yds with the stock iron sights.

my load is 110 gr FFF and a home cast maxiball.

I get groups of 2 inches at 100yds with it.

People keep telling me to get a new BP gun.....but ....why??
Maybe when Storm JR Is 16 I will get a new one and hand the TC down to him.
 
Thanks for all the input so far...guess I will move away from sabots and try cast.
I have an old Lee R.E.A.L. mould, a LEE Mini mould and a TC Maxi mould kicking around and I will do some casting today.
Anyone else ever try the Lee REAL in these guns. The Minis never shot well for me at all in any of my guns so I will most likely avoid this one unless someone here has had any luck with them. Maxis are fine in all my other guns but kick like hell...something my 12 year old son may frown upon when he uses the gun.
How about 777. Anyone try this with cast yet?
I assume all loads mentioned so far are using Pyrodex RS, Select (FFG) or P (FFFG)...I have a couple pounds of each kicking around but would really like to narrow things down before I go to the range.
As for Hornady sabots. Avoid them like the plague. They are too hard and really cause alot of fliers when the weather turns cooler. If you can find them Magnum Research (MMP) sabots are the only trouble free, fairly easy to load sabot out there.

Update:
Tried the Lee REAL 320 bullets @ 80,90 & 100 grn Pyrodex RS. With 80 & 90 grns groups averaged 10", however with 100 grns they shrank to 3-4"...nothing spectacular but it will put meat on the table if shots are held to under 100 yrds.
I know this gun can do better than this...lets see how the Maxi balls do
