TCRC Precision Long Range .22LR Match (April 22, 2012)

Those are interesting thoughts about target shooting in the winter. What is cause behind needing more elevation adjustment in cold weather? Does it have something to do with ballistics? My first thought was a lower temperature will lead to a slower burning of the gunpowder and thus a lower velocity. How much more travel did you need at 300 yd?

Its a combination of colder air and slower powder. I was shooting different ammo than previous matches, so it didn't affect me. Paul was using the same lot of Center-X that he had always been using and the same setup. He needed an additional turn and a half on his B&L 36x scope at 200 and ran out of travel at 300. Not sure what that works out to be in MOA...

A small update:

I ordered some customized archery targets directly from the supplier which don't have the red and blue color. This should make it easier to see hits.

We will only have them for the 200 yard stage at this time. Availability of the customized 300 yards targets will depend on when he does his next run of the FT-122's. This customization is possible because it only involves him shutting off the red and blue ink flow at the end of his run.

I'll post a picture of these when they get here.

Sounds good.

It's a shame we can't buy or make bigger shootNC targets, as none of the DIY methods seem easy to do on a scale necessary for a 300yd 22LR match, and the biggest I could find on midwayUSA (just to see what's out there) was Caldwell 12"x18" and 16" shootNC-type targets.

I picked up some 12" square shootNC-type (but non-adhesive) targets from Lebarons, 10 for $9. I figure they'll be useful stapled in the centre of a bigger target for 200yd and 300yd. If I can spot hits at 300 yds with my 14x scope I'd be happy.

At some point I'll get a good spotting scope that can be used by others at the matches. I'm just waiting for some of the new ones with reticles to be released at the Shot Show.

That would be really helpful. Another person at the match was letting me look through his spotting scope and I was just able to make out the bullet holes in the sight-in target.

Any spotting scope models in particular you've heard about? Are you looking for an MOA reticle like the Leupold one, or will there be mrad models coming out?

Good spotting scopes are a real advantage.

Definitely a good spotting scope is essential. If you cannot consistantly see where you are hitting at 300 yards, it's impossible to correct. I think that is where most people have difficulties. Those with better spotting optics have a real advantage.

Looking forward to seeing the new targets. I know this was not an easy problem to solve. Thanks for the extra effort.

It'll be in February Gord.

Haven't heard particulars, but lets just say there's a buzz going around that something is going to be released given the success of all of the mil/mil tactical scopes that came out last year.

I don't do MOA... I've been looking at the Leupold and the Vortex, both in mil. I like the Horus reticles available in the Leupold... but, its still a Leupold... ugh!

Hoping something good comes out at the Shot Show...

The custom 200 yard targets have arrived. Pardon the bad cell phone pic...

The large black rings had to stay because he cannot shut off colors selectively, its either all or nothing. Its a good thing though, the yellow alone may be hard to see under some conditions.

This should make seeing the hits a lot easier. When he does a run of the FT-122s, I'll get some for 300 yards too. In the mean time, he sent me some that were rejects because they came out light.

Barring bad driving conditions, I'll be at TCRC this Sunday (Jan 23) 8am - 2pm to resight in my 10/22 and get some cold-weather shooting practice.

EDIT: Ouch, -30 windchill tomorrow, I'm going to sit it out.

Ha! And I showed up too...

But yeah, I froze my ass off! It was fruitful though. I tested Eley Pistol Match in my Quad at 200 yards. It grouped well and was amazingly quite. It's only running at about 1000 fps. out of the bolt gun, so there wasn't a sonic crack in the cold weather. Quietest match round I have ever shot. Was surprised that it had the EPS bullet in it though... but it was the old navy blue box, not the new black one.

Also tested more ammo in the 10/22. I'm at the end of my rope with that TacSol barrel. It's ok at 50 yards, not terrible at 100 yards, but falls apart at 200 yards with every ammo I've tested. Ordered an 18" Kidd from Fabsports today. We'll see how that goes... If I don't like it, then next step is a Shilen from Mystic...

Still waiting for some sign of warmer weather before I schedule the next match.

Ahh I'm sorry for saying I'd be there and then chickening out due to the cold. It's just the cold combined with 1.5 hr drive (each way) and waking up early is too much! Perhaps I'll limit my range visits for the ~ 9 months we have +5 degC weather.

With regards to the 10/22, I know there is lots of discussion about different bedding and pressure-point strategies. How do you have yours set up?

I did a pressure pad an inch in front of the V-block, about two inches long. I've been experimenting with different amounts of pressure using shims and wrapping the barrel with tape. Kind of futile though, the TacSol is just a piece of aluminum stock with a $5 barrel liner glued in and the chamber is not much better than a factory one.

anyone heading out this sunday for practice at this? i'm a new TCRC member (joined back in Oct) and really want to get into the 22lr 300 yard shoots. and wouldn't mind working out my newbness before a match..

(talking about jan 30th)
