Teach me the way of the AR

That is a really good question.
Not a DMR, for that I wish to build a dedicated rifle later on.
Not a PDW, gonna build a 1911 for that one day.
(yes I have lots of builds in mind)
So I'm guessing an "all purpose" or CQB.
Unsure what a "service rifle" describes?

Thanks

Perhaps start with a 14.5" or 16" carbine... You can use it for CQB and it'll hold up for SR... Won't make little ragged holes at 300+ but you should be able to score.

The build a purpose base rifle after

The wonderful thing about the AR, is once you build a solid lower, you can build multiple uppers and have it all in virtually one gun.

That's what I plan to do. A modular system. One solid core lower, and several uppers. The icing on the cake is you legally only own one gun, and adding to it like that, is like buying another gun for half the price.

Sure you keep telling yourself that!! :p We should start a pool for how long before those uppers end up getting there own lowers. :D

One FYI depending one what style of AR you're building;

If you choose S&J barrels, it seems they measure they barrel lengths from the shoulder on the barrel extension and not the bolt face (barrel is slightly longer than nominal). This is not 'bad' per se, however, some people who have been building PDWs have found out that their gun doesn't look quite 'right' once assembled (depending on what components were used).

For most people this probably isn't an issue, though. :)

According to the comments on here,
I should expect to have no money in my back account.
I should expect to own lots of AR's for various occasions.

I like point 2 but hate point 1

Yes... welcome to the wonderful world of ARs.

That's one of the things I like about them. You can save yourself some money, by having a single lower and building/buying a bunch of uppers. And you'll have an AR for various purposes (other than punching holes in paper).

Today I bought my first part for my AR build.
A blemished NEA lower from SFRC, now before you start hating.

STOP, and press back on your browser, I am not interested in these arguments, again.

Noted but I am going to ignore it.

This is CGN. All things must degrade into a flame war. The term NEA will stir up an argument just like mentioning ki11erkane will stir up sh*t.

Thanks for all the input guys.

So what I have learned form here and online so far...........

* It can cost me lost of money if I go overboard, so I will try to keep it within reason. *

Here would be my suggestions (just commented on areas where I have experience).

• 6-position adjustable stock: Magpul CTR
• Lower/Upper Parts Kit: DPMS or Stag
• Grip: Magpul MIAD (I also have a grip pad to thicken it more)
• Charging Handle: BCM/Gunfighter Mod 4

You'll also need an extension tube, retainer plate, castle nut, spring and buffer for the lower. I'd go mil-spec rather than commercial.

If you're going with a matching NEA upper, you won't have to worry about the upper parts kit, bolt carrier group, gas tube or gas block. I'd still replace the charging handle with the BCM, though.

For magazines you're going to want some LAR-15's, and I'd replace the followers with the anti-tilt Magpul ones and Magpul ranger base plates.
