teaching your dog to hunt deer .....?

I am thinking specifically of a german shorthaired pointer with this question , but I'm sure techniques used with other dogs would cross over .

does anyone use their dog to hunt deer , moose , elk , ect.... ?

how did you train them and how do you hunt with them ?

I've really only come across using dogs to track a animal as a result of piss poor shot placement .

something else I have wondered , when hunting with your dog , how do you protect their hearing from gunfire ?
 
German shorthairs are bird dogs, like my brittany. She is trained exceptionally well to do what she was bred to do...point and retreive upland birds. Having her chase a living and running deer/moose/elk would be the worst kind of day in the field becuase i know she would run and run far. I'd probably never get her back. So if that happens she'll get one hell of a zap with the ecollar.

Now i really can't be of any help with your question unless you need advice on training it for bird hunting...and as far as protecting their hearing, you don't. The best thing you can do is not take a shot directly by the side of their head.
 
we run hounds on deer and as far as training goes ,we just put deer in front of the dogs a few times and ether thy run them or thy donot ,most hounds will run on instinct ,,thy just go on the track ,,Dutch
 
Yeah, hunting deer with dogs isn't like hunting birds with dogs. Throw out any fantasies you have of walking side by side though the forest with your majestic beast at your side.

A deer dog has one job - Annoy deer. Set up some stands on well used game trails, then let the little fella run free. He'll wander till he finds a scent then traipse around yipping and howling and generally getting on the nerves of deer, who'll then get off their asses and take to the trails - hopefully right in front of you.

For a hunting dog, it's not a high skills position. Slower dogs like beagles are better, as you really don't want them to catch the deer, or even make them run for that matter. Just get them moving. And things go poorly for the dog if they DO catch a grumpy buck.
 
There is nothing better then the first week of November. Up in the park. The big woods frosty morning about 10 or 15 guys surround 150 acres of swamp and hard woods and he sound of a group of hounds opening up on a fresh deer scent ,,Once thy start to tongue your heart skips a beat and you get in the ready to shoot mode ,,Not much can compare to that feeling ,,,I absolutely love it and every hunter should try it at least once ,,,The deer have a 80% chance of getting away from the guys with out being seen as the woods are just so big but that chance of the deer coming your way and offering you a chance at a shoot is what hunting is all about ,anticipation ,,,,,,,Dutch
 
In Alberta it is unlawful to be accompanied by a dog while hunting big game or allow a dog to pursue big game except when hunting cougar under the authority of a cougar license from dec 1 to the last day of feb. ( page 31. Subsection 4. Alberta hunting regulations,)

I know. It's awful. My dog always came with me quadding all the time during the summer. The. During hunting season. She always had to be tied up otherwise she would track me down.

if it is legal to use hounds to hunt were you are any dog can help move deer ,Just having a dog walk threw the bush with the doggers can and will move deer even if the dog is not chasing them .you do have to buy a lic for the dog to hunt big game in Ontario ,,,Dutch
 
Had a very dainty, and very fast greyhound who went after a deer once while we were camping ,,and caught it from the sounds she was making, by the time we caught up to her the deer was gone and she was rolling on the ground howling with a big purple bruise on her inside thigh, lucky to be alive.

Used to hunt like above have to admit was pretty awesome. Miss it! Nothing like when the hounds open up and the chase begins!
 
Well I have used a couple dogs on deer, and a lab and a gsp cross, both were used as indicator dogs, kept in close, both dogs, will almost point, when they had the sent, Mates lab got us lots of deer, she would almost crawl along the ground and lock up on a point once she had seen it, might take five minutes, before I could pick the deer out of the bush, even with binos.
More than one way to hunt a deer dog, also they are fantastic, at finding an deer that been shot and bolted 50m.
Quite common in my old country (New Zealand) also lots of Europe, to use a dog to indicate deer, vista, Gsp, Gwp and lab, all being common, don't want a dog that wont stay with in about 5m off you.
good times, great hunting partner is a dog. always keen, and always right too, cost me a few easy deer till I worked that out.
