Since the upper of an AR does not have any classification because it is not a firearm. The lower is the "restricted" part of this firearm. Can somebody make something that an AR upper fits into and then this firearm would not be restricted? Maybe some companies already did this, I just don't know. Or it's the fact that anything who will attach to the AR upper falls into the restricted class.

Spectra Balistics a site sponsor has begun on working on a bolt action lower to take all the AR accessories. I'd imagine the bolt or BCG in AR terms would need to be replaced with one with a handle.

So to answer your question, no, it's only the lower that is restricted, all the other parts are just parts that you don't even need a gun licence to purchase although I'd imagine many stores would still demand to see one.

If an ar upper fits and fires it's an ar15 lower

Even if it requires duct tape and is only capable of a shot or two before kabooming.

When ATRS was first creating their Modern Sporter series, they sent the first version to be tested by the RCMP lab. The lab litterally duct taped an AR15 upper to the ATRS lower reciever and it fired a primed, empty cartridge. It would have explored if it was a live cartridge but that was enough to declare that reciever restricted as an AR15 variant.

So anything that is made and will accept the AR15 upper is a "variant" and is classified as restricted I guess.

This is what I was thinking about when I asked. I had another picture but lost it. It was the insides of the "box" He had 2 square plates to mount the trigger and long rods to connect at the handles at the back. This is nowhere close to a regular AR lower. So anything like this would be considered a "variant" as well I guess.

Are you reading the same OP, because I didn’t see this question even remotely asked.

...although I'd imagine many stores would still demand to see one.

You’d imagine wrong then. Where do people come up with this stuff?

ATRS was making non-res '50bmg' lowers for the canam uppers at one point. From what I understood, they had a 'block' that protruded above the top of the lower that would prevent a standard AR upper from seating properly on said lower. They then had to modify the uppers with a cut out so that it could mate with these non-res lowers.

Any reason the same thing couldn't be done?

If an ar15 upper fits on it it will be deemed a variant and restricted. Both upper and lower need to be proprietary for it to even be considered for non restricted status.

Atrs makes the modern varmint and modern sporter. The modern varmint is a small frame self loading semi automatic sporting rifle that shares features with an ar15 like egronimics and appearance. The modern sporter share the same plus parts compatibility. Neither can be fitted with anything other than atrs proprietary uppers.

Maccabee defense also makes a nr receiver set that is also proprietary that share the looks egronimocs and parts compatibility for the most part. These are the only 2 options to have a semi auto firearm that is non restricted that uses most of the parts.

Now you will have to have a barrel longer than 470mm or you will be in possession of a non registered restricted firearm and will land yourself in a heap of trouble. There are 0 ways to skirt the law regarding a semi auto centerfire barrel length and if you put a barrel shorter than 470mm on one of our only 2 non restricted receiver sets there will be a mob of people ready to fight you
