In a double rifle, would you recommend this calibre as a strong 'all-rounder' for medium to heavy (bear) game?
(and I don't give a sh*t what wiki has to say)

I had a Ruger #1 in 9.3x74R, its a nice classic cartridge with lots of history behind it. A 286Gr bullet @ 2350fts is lots of power, I would not hesitate to shoot at any big game within 250-300yards max. If you search on the Alaska fourm, one fellow there has some experience with this round on a large grizzly bear with pics.

And dgradinaru bought it from me... I have another one and it is an excellent cartridge... a classy round for moose.

it is equivalent of a 375 flanged and good for a lot of stuff ... in Europe there is using that caliber for driven hunts but it can be used for really bigger game like the 9.3x62 so bear is not a problem for sure.

You're going down to 20, I'm going down to 10.

22LR bolt
6.5x55 bolt
7x57 bolt
30-06 bolt

two non-refurbished SKS ('54 Tula, '53 Izhevsk)

12 ga 870 (18" Cylinder bore, 23" fully rifled barrel)

7.5mm Swiss Service revolver (antique status field plinker)
327 magnum ("lucky 7")

**double in 9.3x74R??

I have ten more to go before I get there... four rimfire, four shotguns, five No.1's, five M77's and two 94's (.30/30 & .44)... I think... the problem is releasing the others... still hanging on.

I might go up to 11 if I can find a nice lever chambered in 32-20. I have a love for 32 calibre. Underated in both pistol and rifle configurations.

I have a few non-refurbished SKS's to unload, as well as a POS Kel-Tec, and a couple of very nice Tikka T3's.

I concur on the .32-20 as it's a dandy to plink & hunt small to medium critters with. Still kick me arse over letting go of a Savage 23C back in the 80's as well as not jumping on one of the Marlins in recent times.:(

Could you guys kindly post photos of your beasts?

Mine is no longer mine. Went to a new home in BC.

The remarkable thing about a '74 in a Ruger No 1 is that you can load it up to far beyond comfortable. The case holds 5 grains more powder than a 9.3X62, and the Ruger chamber has a very long throat, as well as being capable of handling 60,000+ psi chamber pressures.

So, anyone care to take a guess what 286 gr bullets can be safely driven at in the No 1?

Factory 286 gr loads run a bit under 2300 fps out of the 22" barrel, and are quite pleasant to shoot. Get one, Kurgan. You won't be disappointed!

I shot my bison with the x62 so there is no reason that the x74 wouldn't do an identical job. As Ted mentions you can load a #1 up to uncomfortable levels. I wonder how fast Douglas could make a 286 grainer go out of a #1...

^ faster then any acme rocket lol. The 74 is got to be one of the ###iest cartridges ever designed. Tall and thin and just feels awesome in the hand. More then enough for bears even big ones. Legal for most dangerous game in Africa to. Most places anyway. It looks like a spike but is a sweet pleasure to shoot. It's on my list of double guns to own. Sxs for sure.
