Yesterday I tried, what I believe was a Supermatic citation ...military something. The gun felt right, so right I might just have to buy one. I heard some stories about those guns.
''they used to be of excellent quality but they are not anymore''

Any pleased or unpleased high standard owners around here?
Should I buy a vintage or a new one?

The original High Standard Company in Connecticut closed in 1984, since then there have been two companies using the High Standard name and tooling. I bought my High Standard Victor in 1972, still have it. The Victor
and 10X were their top of the line target models, the Supermatic IIRC was
a less fancy model but a good shooter. I found the grip angle on all the High
Standards I have fired are just right for me.

I had a Supermatic Citation and I thought it was an excellent gun. I'm looking for a Victor or 10x now. The Citation had the sight on a bridge attached to the frame, bridging over the slide. The lower models have the sight on the rear slide itself, and the Victor has a sight rail that is attached entirely to the barrel. There were various barrels available and higher end models have adjustable triggers.

I'd prefer an old gun as I have heard nothing but good about the originals.

What you want is a High Standard from Hamden Connecticut. We've got a couple used as club guns and they just keep on shooting and shooting AND SHOOTING! Parts are available. Finding good magazines can sometimes be a bit of a problem. The S&W model 41 is a better choice in this regard.

A good target pistol should have both front and rear sights fixed together on the barrel. A rear sight on a moving piece like the slide is not as reproducible.

Tks guys,
Mike, I'm the guy who started the thread: chronic jam....on S&W41.
After 1100$ I'm still having trouble with it. Suddenly, high standards become appealing.....

Do you know who carries them in Canada?

Nobody "carries" Hamden High Standards. They are scattered across the land in mom and pop gun shops used racks.

From what I read, I would avoid any of the new production High Standards. Al Simmons in Hamilton had them but has not had them (nor they tell me will they ever sell them) for a long time. I gather they had a lot of problems with them.

$1100 for a model 41? What vintage?

If the springs don't do the trick, have you considered having a decent pistol smith look at it? Wortner Gun Works down the road from me in Chatham does top work, and does S&W warranty service.

The model 41 is one of the best .22 target pistols ever made. I wouldn't be giving up on it so fast!
