tell me about Ruger P85

I bought one when they first came out. It hasn't seen allot of shooting, though. Never had a problem with it.

Used it to go rabbit hunting, once. Actuall hit a running rabbit, with it. Betcha I couldn't do it again.....

People seem to think that they aren't that great. More will chime in, though.

I think Rugers are just fine. They certainly aren't in the same class as a $1000 1911 or Sig Sauer, but for the price I think they are a good buy. I don't own a P85, but I have a P89 and haven't had any issues with it. Goes bang every time I pull the trigger, and I'm not that bad of a shot with it.

If you can get the Ruger for $300-$400 tops then it would be a good pistol for the money. They are kinda clubby, though. If you have to pay significantly more for it, personally I'd add the extra money & go for a brand new CZ75/85 pistol.

I had a P85 .
Mixed feelings over it . It always went bang and was fairly accurate .
about the cheapest reliable semi auto non chinese pistol you can buy .
Personally I didn't like the magazine release and the first shot trigger pull was a little much , single action was ok but I couldn't get past the double action shot .
On the whole , IMO , I'd go with an Armco prepped 1911 .

Heh, irony..

I bought Rick's P-85. I owned one when they first arrived on scene when I lived in California. Was a great pistol then and unfortunately I sold it before I moved back here. I was lucky enough to find Rick's for sale and don't regret it. I have a soft spot in my heart for P-Series and this one eats everything I throw down it's throat, never had any problems....

I had one when they first came out. It had a safety recall on the firing pin within months of buying it. Supposedly the firing pin would snap and get jammed in the slide which would cause it to slam fire the remaining rounds in the mag. I sent it off for the fix and they gave me a new 18 round magazine for my troubles. It would go bang when you pulled the trigger but it was not as accurate as the S&W 4506 in .45ACP I also shot at the time.

I bought my Ruger P85 MkII in 1992 and it has never stuttered. I have two slides for it: one has ajustable sights and the other night sights. I had enough confidence in it to use it for a house gun for years. Regards, Richard :D

When I was a struggling university student wanting to get into pistol shooting I chose a Ruger P89, purely because of price. I really wanted a Glock but couldn't afford one at the time. It was 1993 I believe when I finally saved up enough and bought my Ruger and hit the range with it and some 115gr. FMJ. Like what the others said, I found the DA first trigger pull very long, but the single action trigger pull wasn't too bad and the gun was suprisingly accurate all things considered. I found it to be a little heavy and a bit chunky, the mag release was small and ackward but no other real complaints other than it wasn't a Glock, but me and my budget could live with it. It was a very good first pistol, I paid less than $450 for it and it went bang every time I pulled the trigger, it was a good gun.

As luck would have it, the following year found me with a better paying summer job before classes started in the fall, so I saved up and traded in my beloved Ruger for a brand new G22, right off the line. Finally had my Glock, since then there's been three more and no looking back.

The Ruger is a nice pistol for the price. If you have your heart set on something else, it leaves a little to be desired that I just couldn't get passed, but it was a well built and nice shooting gun for the price.

if you don't want clunky and chunky go with the ruger p345 whcih came in at just over $600 brand new from wholesale sports. mine came in last week in 45acp and the thing is beyond beautiful and compact. i've got big hands and the thing feels tiny, first DA shot is not too bad but then the SA is sweet. i picked up the KP345R (picatinny rail stainless version) fires everything flawlessly

I have owned a P85 & a P90 and never had a single malfunction with either. They may be a little 'lack-lustre' but the price of them reflects it. Buy it and if you want to upgrade later sell it and get a 1911 when you have more $$$ to spend.

I have a P89...I went with the Ruger because I wanted a decocker and stainless steel. It fit into my price range of under $600.00. the gun is tough and has never had a hiccup and eats any ammo you feed it. I guess I am a bit of a ruger fan as I also have a .357 magnum.and a MKlll .22 as well..all are strong reliable guns.

Years ago, I used to shoot with Don Leadham, IPSC National Champion in the early '90's. He won one at a SOF match in Vegas and told me that it even made a horrible boat anchor!

Tufenuf: my P85 is very forgiving, feeds and fires any reload, any bullet shape. However, while reasonably accurate with jacketed, the groove diameter is about .358, and leads up badly with cast bulets up to .357. After 20 rounds, cast bullets go sideways at 25 yds.

All depends on what you want the gun for. Business or pleasure.
Yes, the ruger is not a super accurate fancy target pistol. HOWEVER Rugers don't break, and they don't jam. If your life is going to depend on it, the Ruger won't let you down.
I have heard the quotes about "clunky", well, I think thats just because people don't take the time getting used to the pistol. I would rather have "clunky" and reliable rather than pretty and worry about functioning when needed. I would use it for "minute of people" rather than "minute of angle."
