Tell me about the .270 Wby Mag

270 is good for deer, deftnitely not moose or elk. I know a lot of people won't agree with me but that is my opinion, based on experience. You just cannot trust a 270 caliber bullet to penetrate and stay intact on an animal the size of a moose. You need penetration, not speed. Heavy bullets win every time. Weatherby calibers were made for gullible people, not hunters.

You are right I don't agree! 150 gr Nosler partion did an awesome job on a 1200lbs moose from my 270wsm. :D

I read on Shortmags.com that in head to head comparision .270WSM equals Weatherby performance with less recoil and less costlier ammunition
Well that is not quite true with the 150 and 160 grain bullets... Case capacity wins here.
But... if you use equal barrel lengths in both calibers they are a lot closer than you would think. The velocity difference with 130 and 140 grain bullets is within 50 fps even with the 2" barrel discrepancy, and if you shoot a weatherby with a 24 inch barrel the difference is negligible.:)

For example taken from Lymans 48th Ed.

270 wsm 130 gr. Interlock IMR 4831 66.5 velocity=3280

270 wm 130 gr Interlock IMR 4831 69gr velocity=3288

What's really kind of funny is that my .270 Winchester will get within less than 100 fps of those velocites with 55 grains of IMR-4350 and that isn't even known to be the fastest powder in the .270. To be fair this isn't a 22" barrel but a Ruger #1B with a 26" barrel, but it is an interesting comparison.

I was at just under 3200fps with 130gr XBT using RL22 out of a 22" barrel, I wonder what that load would do in the 26" tube of a #1. I've seen claims of 3400fps and even 3500fps with the 270 WSM and 130gr bullets out of 23 and 24" barrels.

Interesting:) . I would assume all things are relative and that using the fastest powder and 26 inch pipes these figures would be higher in the 270 wsm and 270 WM.

Cheers:)

Kristian, I have also seen claims of those velocities with the 270 WSM out of 24" barrels.

What I can tell, you, is that at least two guys on this board have actually seen considerably over 3500 fps out of a 24" barrel in my 270 Wby! :D

Yeah well the air is thinner way up there Ted..:)
I have watched a T-3 in 270WSM (24 3/8's barrel) shoot 130 Sierras over the Chrony at 3390 fps using Mag-Pro powder... sub MOA accuracy.

Another point to consider is that the Wby has survived forty years. It is not a common cartridge but is not rare either. Will you be able to get brass etc for the WSM in 5 or 10 years? Will you be able to sell it if you have to?

Hey guys,

Just dug up this post again to get my juices flowing. An update on the project is as follows.

Picked up a Rem 700 LSS .330 Win Mag as a stainless action donor (courtesy of a friend of Why Not's, thanks Ted :) ). Stock has long since been sold and the near new stainless barrel is sitting on a shelf at Guntech's if anyone is interested in buying it ;) .

Stock showed up a couple of weeks ago and has been shipped off to Guntech to join the action. MacMillan fibreglass 700 Mtn stock, black. Was sure eyeballing the Hunter's Edge but for the extra $$$ it was going to cost I figured the difference between 22 oz. and 33 oz was minimal - stock I got was already made and in the warehouse and came in at $300.00 US shipped on special, compard to waiting 6-8 weeks for the Hunter's Edge at a cost of damn near $600.00 US.

Barrel is a 24" #1 contour Gaillard and should be arriving on the Island in the very near future I hope :) .

Have got Talley lightweight 1" low rings sitting on my shelf along with a Kahles AH 2-7x33 matte scope all ready to package up and ship off to Dennis for lapping and mounting once he gives me the word.

Am going to have him also install a Kwik-Klip conversion on the rifle. The added weight isn't too bad for the benefit of having a detachable mag.

Am sticking with the Rem 700 trigger for now. Dennis is going to work his magic on it and polish er up and bring her down to a nice crisp 2 1/2 - 3 lbs or so.

I've got about 150 rounds of brass sitting ready to go along with a new set of RCBS dies and a few boxes of bullets to start playing with. Have picked up some Barnes Triple-Shoks in 130 gr and 140 gr and can't wait to try them out.

If anyone has some pet .270 Wby loads involving the TSX's please share them with me. Any favourite powders?

I'm like a giddy little schoolgirl waiting for her prom date to show up. :D :D :D

Hey, I didn't know my 257 Weatherby could be used for hunting, I was just shooting pop cans with it and it barely has enough power to pentrate those nasty Coke cans.

I have a 270 WSM, but I would prefer it in 270 Weatherby. I only wished they made the Vanguard in 270 Weatherby!!!!!
