Tell me about the 308 Norma Mag Cal

Thanks everyone I just talked to the local gun smiths (they make the huaskamaw rifles) Its only going to cost 125 for the rechamber job, the kicker is the bolt its 450 and it needs to be ordered from finland its going to take 30-90 days so the conversion will cost less then a used rifle alone and I don't have to buy another scope, bases, rings and sling. I'm going to got through with this conversion.

Why would you have to buy a bolt? The one you have can be opened up with little work and a change of the extractor.

It would be easier to sell your rifle and buy a new T3 in 300 Win Mag and have the barrel set back a couple threads and chambered to 308 Norma...or just leave it in 300 Win Mag.

$125 + $450 is another rifle. - dan

Find a new smith.

Just got off the phone wiht the smith. The inability to work the bolt is due to the fact that the extractors for Tikka (Sako) are pinned in and can't rightly be moved due to needing to make up metal that ain't there and (as a welder i can understand) welding ain't an option. This is only an issue because I am going from standard to magnum, there would be simular problems going the other way due to the ammount the pin hole would need to be moved is too much to make up and not enough to make a new pin hole. These extracors are married to their range of calibres(small rifle such as 223, standard such as 270 308 3006, and magnum). As previously said I am going through with this conversion as it simply makes me happy to do so. Thank you everyone for the positive input

Why? This seems reasonable enough to me but that being said I don't know. I'm going to call them in the morning about the bolt I wasn't aware that it could posably be worked to open it up

As stated, you should only need a magnum extractor, no need to 'move' the current one.

I have a 30-06 Improved reamer I'll lend your 'smith...quick and easy way to pick up a hundred feet per second, the Norma will get you 200 fps over the '06, or thereabouts. Which might translate into a fraction of an inch of trajectory and a few ft/lbs of energy but if you really want it, get it.

Believe me there's nothing special about the 308 Norma.....I have one as well as a 30-06 and a 300 Win Mag.

Oh, and I'd get a new 'smith too....the extractor can be made to work without buying a new bolt.
