So I keep eyeing these little 16 1/2" rugers, and apparently I'm not going to find a 350 rem mag in a compact or model seven......so: How does the 358 rate? Forgive my ignorance, but I've never even seen a cartridge...is it a long or short action? Whats it based on? Performance?

Thanks for any info!

It's a necked up 308 case to 35 caliber, very potent little round.
I would load 200 grain bullets and keep my shots under 200 yards. It's capable of further distance, but the trajectory will be like a rainbow.

With mine, I get 2380FPS from a 225grain partition. Zeroed at 200, it is 2 3/4" high at 100 and 12" low at 300. My son just killed a moose with it, bang-flop. Very effective.

Wrong Way, I've been eyeing the same thing. Nice little iron sighted bush gun. Ruger does make a stainless .350 RemMag (stainless with synthetic stock), all you'd have to do is chop the barrel. The nice thing about the .358 is if you get bored with it you can simply rebarrel to any .308 based cartridges without messing with the bolt. The .350 is nice though. I'm torn between the two.

The 358 served me well a couple of weeks ago on a moose hunt. It should be more popular than it is.....

I have a M95 in 358. I get 2400 fps witha pointed 250 gr bullet. Similar trajectory as a 308 with a 180 at 300 yards. I have never been able to connect when carrying this rifle, but not its fault. Delivers a lot more down range omph than a 35 Rem. Sighted in for 150 yards. 1" hi at 50. 2" hi at 100 and 5" low at 200. I make the cases out of 308 Win cases.

BTW, the 356 Win is the same caliber in a rimmed version of the case. I have a Winchester 94AE with a peep sight as a short range (bad weather) deer/moose rifle. A very handy rifle. Gets 2300 fps with a 225 gr.

The 358 is a great hunter's cartridge. We get all bent out of shape over fps and long range capability, when 90% of hunting is done within 200 yeards or less. I have a BLR in 358 (along with rifles in 35 whelen and 350 Rem Mag and 358 Norma). 35s are better killers then 30s, period. They are usually available in easy to pack rifles, quick to your shoulder. Buy one, you won't be disappointed. - dan

Ryan I used a similar cartridge but in metric last fall (9,3x57). They kill all out of proportion for the size of the cartridge. In a lightweight firearm heavy loads are entertaining shall we say.....
Some days I wish I had never sold mine. It will serve you well.
