Tell me about the Winchester Model 88

I have one in .308 and love it. Like someone else said..DO NOT TAKE IT APART!! Learned that lesson the hard way. It is one of those rifles that just feels good to shoot with Iron sights.

Its not that terribly hard. Just has steps to follow and the use of "slave pins" which you can make with old worn out drill bits of approriate size. But if you dont have to disassemble it, Don't do it. I've taken both of mine apart enuf times to know its sequence.

Those videos are very good. It really doesn't look that difficult with the proper pins.

It's only difficult the first time.
Having a blown up parts picture, as with most other lever guns, is a definite help.

Getting the slave pins just the right length is important, once you've got that, there's no real issue.

The magazine holds 5 when detached but it will not lever a shell in with 5. I guess technically it holds 5, but you would have to put four in the mag and then lever one into the chamber.

The mag will hold five rounds, but will not go in the rifle with the bolt closed if it has five in it.
To get five rounds, you need to chamber the first.

That is for five rounds, safety on, open the bolt, insert the mag, close the bolt. One round is now chambered, and you have four in the mag.

88 Win.

I have had 2 88 stocks break on me, both times when the rifle fell over while leaning against something. Both broke in the thin wood at the action/magazine. Never heard of one breaking at the wrist. Stocks can be a real pain to replace, thank God for Boyd's. Last one I had a fellow with a duplicator make me one from a black/grey laminate blank and it looks great. I've had a bunch of them over the years and think they are great rifles.
