Tell me about this old Ithaca SxS

Its a 20 ga. Ithaca made in Ithaca N.Y. Barrels are 26". The receiver looks to have a case hardened finish with a pointing dog on each side. I can't find a model number on the gun. Serial # is 246###.

What model is this gun?
What might the barrels be choked?
How old is it?
Value?
Anything else I should know; good, bad, interesting?

Ithaca Flues SxS Field Grade or a NID. (New Ithaca Double) Maybe Pre-WW2? (from the 1920's or so, until 1948??)

Being that appears to be an upland gun, my educated guess says Modified choke in the left barrel, & IC in the right barrel.

There should be more info in the flats on the underside of the barrels, that you'll probably have to take apart to view.

I have the same gun (Field Grade Flues Model) in 12 gauge with 30" barrels choked mod and full. Mine was made in 1925 and shoots trap loads great, I took it out for a round of sporting clays and loved it.

My dad bought the gun at auction for maybe $200, mine has a full pistol grip stock and added 1" Ithaca style butt pad.

Yours being a 20 gauge field model with what looks like original butt pad would probably sell $350-400 if you found the right buyer.

According to this PDF from Ithaca guns it puts your serial number made in 1914.

Thanks Winchested :). Does your's have a 3-position safety? On mine, middle is safe and it will drop the firing pins in either the up or down position.

Since it looks like my gun was made in 1914, can anybody tell me about the chamber length?

You can call or email ithaca gun company they are great at getting you info on your guns I have a 1917 flues 4e trap gun they gave me every detail except the engravers name. I've also called them when looking at older damascus guns give them the serial number and they email you everything
 
Ithaca flues and if 20 g only 21/2" chamber unless it has been opened up by someone.
They didn't go to 23/4 until the NID came out.
Should be really a really light gun to carry. Use low pressure loads though.

Anybody know any sources for 2 1/2" 20 ga. shells?

MEC makes an adapter that will allow me to reload 2 1/2". If I can't get factory shells to shoot then reload, I'm thinking about cutting regular hulls down to 2 1/2". Anybody have any experience with reloading 2 1/2" 20 ga.?
 
I've done the cut down method with an over-shot card glued in to make 2 1/2" 16ga shells. Works very well. I started with live shells, cut the hull to 2 1/2" by making a cutting guide/dye out of an appropriately sized chunk of pipe. When the shell was dropped into the short length of pipe, it exposed 1/4" or so when the rim stopped on the other end of the tube. Then just cut with an exacto knife flush with the tube, remove the wad/shot/powder, and load as per data for a 2 1/2" load using the all the components but some of the shot and the unknown powder. Then just glue in an over shot card and go shooting.
 
I had one in 12ga and it was 2 3/4....I'm not an expert but don't assume it's 2.5 until you measure it or see if a spent 2 3/4 shell slides in freely.

This gun in 20ga is much more sought after than in 12ga, maybe worth $450.

Kent Gamebore shells come in 2-½ inches. They are hard to find though and you may need to special order them.
 
The Flues and other models of the era were replaced bu the NID (New Ithaca Double) because the actions were not standing up well to pressures in modern shells. It is common to find cracks inthe action -- more commanly in the 12ga but I have seen it in 20ga as well. Best to shoot low pressure ammunition only!!!!!

Here's that data from Kent on their 2 1/2" 20 ga. shells:

"Our G2025 GHF28 loading comes in a plastic Cheddite hull with a fiber wad. We make it available in #6 or #7 shot. The velocity is 1262 and 1246 FPS respectively. Pressure is 8122 and 7686."

Any thoughts on these pressures in the Flues?
