Well, it's come time for me to get a better scope for my Remington. Currently it has a Tasco Varminter 8-32x44 on it - I wanted to see if a cheap scope was really as bad as all that. (it's not terrible, actually - needs to be zeroed before each session, but holds zero well enough to shoot 1/2" groups once set.)

For my needs (gopher patch) I don't need photographic quality lenses, nor do I really need 458-level robustness. I also don't really care about uber-bright light-transmission, or rain resistance. I REALLY like side-focus, and target-style knobs. I also want some sort of mil-dot or other range compensation reticle, and fine (1/8 MOA) crosshairs. I like highly-responsive adjustments, 1/4 MOA or better.

So based on my assessment of my needs, I think the Bushnell 4200 6.5-20 side-focus model ought to work nicely. I was also considering a Leupold VX-III, but as far as I can tell its only advantage is better-quality glass, which I don't particularly need.

Realistically, I don't think I'll be making many 500+ yard gopher shots, but I'd like the security of knowing that my scope is capable, even if I'm not.

Are there any other scopes I should be considering in the $700-$1300 range?
