Tell us about the Modern Magnum...

I have pmed them a lot about this. Initially if they do it, you can have it in any caliber, so long as it is 300wm. The modern hunter had a large market since we are not allowed Ar10, the obvious appeal of the MV in 223. Now a much smaller market to the big game hunter.

Personally i was advocating for a MM in the 2.5" magnum family. They pretty much said no chance.
 
I would like to see it in .338LM, but at this time its just a pipe dream and I have zero experience with calibers larger than .308, so my opinion is likely of zero value. I just want it in that caliber as I hope some day aquire a DTA to keep it company. :) all pipe dreams for far in the future though!
 
I'd take a .300WM. I threw "the short mags" (.300WSM) out there 'cause I assumed it'd be easier to make work vs. the .300WM.

I'm guessing it'd be more than the MH??? 7k?? Likely at least a pound heavier too???

I'm just guessing here.... I'd love to be correct by someone who knows.

If you had access to die or ammo sales, i would think that the 7mm Rem Mag or 300wm would be the highest of any common magnum. I would not want to know what ATRS has invested in bringing our the MH or MV, or what they would see it costing to go ahead with the MM. I seem to remember that they just invested $250,000 in another CNC milling machine.

I certainly could not blame them for going with the most common magnum chamberings, with the highest ammo sales. They need to recover their investment, and certainly have my admiration for going forward with any of this in these uncertain political times.

My thought with going forward with the 2.5" family is that it is a family of cartridges. 264wm, 7 rm, 308 nm, 338 wm, 358 nm, 416 taylor, and 458 wm. Much like the MH incorporated all the 308 win family.

I think that if one used some google fu, you would find that there are some semi auto firearms already out there using 338 Lapua mag, as well as the Chey tac calibers. Not sure if they are available in Canada, but they overcame some challenging engineering issues. Non of these are what most people would consider portable. Each probably require a bank loan for most people.
 
What's the harm in discussing a hunting rifle in the hunting rifle forum? Sure it's purely speculation at this point, but that's half the fun of it. If we can't discuss than what is the point of this forum? Rick isn't going to answer our speculation at this point anyways.
 
I think the biggest problem with the Modern Magnum will be the weight of the rifle.

They can't get the weight of the MH under 8lbs, what will a magnum weigh?

Maybe we could place some bets on it??!!

I bet it'll add 1-1.5lbs to the receiver to make it a magnum. Why do I think that?? I have no f-Ing clue....!!!

The weight of a Browning BAR longtrac 300 WM with 24" barrel is only 7lbs, 8oz. ....where does the extra weight come in the Modern design?

Whole bunch more metal in the receiver than a BAR, plus the stock, grip and forearm probably weight more.

The Modern Varmint is a scaled down Modern Hunter and it weighs about a pound less. I think it would be fair the say the magnum would weigh 1 to 1.5 lbs more. That makes it a pretty hefty rifle.
 
Carbon barrels will be even more popular with the Modern Magnum would be my guess. Still, if you could finish it under 12 lbs it wouldn't be horrible for a lot of hunters.
 
12lbs with or without glass??

I'm not gonna pretend I've carried rifles for weeks on end like me if you, but 12 total would be max for me!!!

I was thinking the exact same thing about the CFW barrels.

Kinda makes me wonder if a gun like that would put them in the running for a military contract???

With glass. It'd be a heavy piece but still manageable.
