I have a Bench Source annealer. I have 650 degree tempilaq for the neck and 450 for the body. My question is the instructions say to heat till the 650 melts. What colour should it be when it melts. My test brass tempilaq turns black, but the temperature could be 750 or 800. How do I know when it is 650. I hope I explained my problem

Try putting the tempilaq on the inside of the neck. I find when its on the outside of the neck it is hard to tell when it melts because the force of the flame seems to dry it and it turns black right away. I dont usually use it any more. I turn out the lights in the room and watch the neck colour. The colour should be just barely cherry red, definitely not orange to be the correct temp.

Agree, tempilaq on the inside. Most just use tempilaq at first on a few till they see the proper color change at the neck. It's not the same for all brass.

The 650 stuff pretty much melts and burns black at the same time, the 450 stuff melts and turns clear then pink when it cools.

I just use the drill and socket method with 450 stuff on the case body just below the shoulder. Works for me.
