BENTON, Tennessee (AP) -- A bear attacked a family at a camp site in the Cherokee National Forest on Thursday, killing a 6-year-old girl and injuring her 2-year-old brother and mother, authorities said.

The attack took place near a pool of water on Chilhowee Mountain, said Dan Hicks, spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Witnesses described the bear picking up the boy in its mouth while the mother and other visitors tried to fend it off with sticks and rocks, Hicks said. The mother was injured before the bear was chased away.

The girl ran away during that attack, but was found dead a short time later with the bear nearby. A park ranger fired at least one shot at the bear before it bolted off.

The woman and her son were flown by helicopter to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, where both were being treated for wounds consistent with a bear attack, Hicks said.

Hospital officials did not immediately return calls for comment, but Hicks said the boy was listed in critical condition. The victims' names were not released.

Forest Service employees, TWRA game agents and several hunters were searching for the bear in an area spanning several thousand acres.

The 640,000-acre park runs along the southeastern Tennessee border with North Carolina, southwest of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

And this is where they actually have a spring bear hunt. This happens here in Ontaro and people just shrug their shoulders. I reckon its only a matter of time before this happens more often. But will anything change?

Sad story... If they'd been properly prepared for being in bear country, this would have never made the news... Being prepared means having a GUN with you...

Cheers

Maybe some day people will understand that those cute little black guys are dangerous. People who go into bear country assume a certain degree of risk, and they must understand that risk, and take precautions to minimize that risk. If you are not prepared to carry a firearm, and be prepared to use it, don't go into bear country. Sometimes hanging your food between a couple of trees isn't going to be enough.

I will not hike in parks which have rules preventing me from carrying a firearm. I won't go out of my way to kill a bear I'm not hunting, but a bear that hangs around a camp ground needs to be dealt with. If driving it away doesn't work, the options are somewhat limited.

And that is what so many fail to understand.

If a bear comes into your camp area, 90% of them can be driven off with some rock chuckoing and loud noises, and never come back.

Unfortunatley, many people are lulled into a false sense of security, and beieve ALL bears will react that way.

Some will come back, and some just dont give a #### and will come in regardless.

BC is a big place, and there are lots of wild spaces to go to that dont' invlolve parks that prohibit firearms. I am with you on that. An when I visit the park near me that has a fireams prohibition, it is only for the day, and there is a rifle in the truck.

Buckshot is for Varmints.
Bearspray is just Human-Spice.

The loss of a child to a bear is a tragedy that should never be...
This will happen in Ontario and the government should be held responsible...

In this particular National Forest firearms are only allowed during hunting season. I know for a fact that some of the very best bear dogs in the country are located within less than an hours drive from this campground--(see Maddogs post on Bears in Michigan) they will Not be used. Politically uncorrect with CNN watching. Using traps baited with honey buns and they got one about the right size so far. Necropsy to follow--check for rabies.

Karelien Bear dogs are not bear dogs at all--the breed was developed in Finland for hunting European Elk--which we call moose.

how many have to die, before the tree huggers see the truth?may that little girl rest in peace:(

this is enraging,to hear of this sad new,s

From what I have read the end of the spring bear hunt in Ontario had nothing to do with an animal management strategy. It was solely brought about by alot of money injected into the anis cause by a rich business man and I heard it was alot of money.

Here in B.C. the government has developed a no shoot policy on bears which wander into the urgban areas as long as they are not as threat. There was a sow with three cubs which spent months eating the fruit in the area and there was a school within eye sight of where they were spending the daylight hours. I had the sow come at me one morning and it was only a bluff but I phoned the RCMP and told them we had a public safety issue here. The RCMP Officer came up, saw the bears and totally agreed. He contacted the consevation guys and they said leave them be. Until it turns into a worst case scenario government people will walk around with their head up their ass unless the bears move into their area.;)
