From left: Remington bulk, Winchester bulk, Hornady XTP, Remington Golden Sabre, Speer Gold Dot, Federal Hydra Shok, Winchester Ranger

Note: The first three on the left are available as bullets for reloading. The other four are factory loaded ammunition.

Having fired a number of these bullets now, I have noticed that the Gold Dot and the Golden Sabre penetrate the furthest at approximately 11", while all the others go to about 9" in wet paper.

Expansion varies from 0.600" to around 0.640" which is really not a huge difference in the big picture. Only the Hydra-Shok was outside of this range with a huge expanded size of close to 3/4". However it sacrifices a bit of penetration due to its size.

Note: One of the Remington bulk bullets failed when its hollow point became packed up with paper and the round penetrated as a solid. This was the only brand to suffer such a failure although I understand this sort of failure is not totally uncommon.

Note: The Golden Sabre continually flirts with core/jacket separation, in fact one bullet did fall apart when we dug it out. However all the bullets were found intact. FWIW this bullet is the RCMP/Federal Corrections issue round.

Note: We tried packing a hollow point with grease to increase expansion. It had no effect on the bullet's performance.

Thanks to PE90Shooter for donating the Gold Dots.

I have found your information very interesting, and in talking so some friends etc, I ended up compiling the data and images you collected and put it in a pdf and word doc to print and keep all the relavent data together. If anyone is interested in a copy, click this link

Save the file and voila, you have all this and the previous 9mm ballistics stuff in one document.

E4L Hey, good job, I was thinking of putting all the data into a little spreadsheet but you have done an excellent job. Makes sending it around that much easier. :)

Swampy: Unlikely unless someone wants to send me a .40 cal pistol and a wide assortment of ammo to test. 8) I have a .45 but finding all that different ammo would be difficult and/or expensive. I just happened to have collected a few of each of the 9mm rounds so I decided to test them out.

I have a couple of more 9mm rounds to try yet but nothing I expect to be earthshaking or wildly different from what I have done already.

I am still trying to get a subsonic rifle round to expand reliably which is turning out to be much more difficult than I thought.

I will try out some hot .357 Mag rounds on the kevlar to see how it handles those.

I believe I may have some 357 mag THV rounds some where but I suggest you get a vest in the IIIA range .Also have some exotic 45 acp rounds if needed

I'll donate some .50AE if you like

I'd like to see the Win Ranger SXT 124gr +P stuff tested as that seems to be all the rage these days in LE 9mm ammo.

Federal Corrections don't use Speer as far as I am aware. Good info though. The Federal and Ranger are both excellent rounds. Federal would be my choice.

THV are prohibited, you likely have something else.

If you have some of the Yugo made 357Mag, they have a fairly pointed FMJ bullet that I would imagine will slice through body armour fairly well. They look just like the old US made AP ammo issued to the highway patrol.

there are some differences between the new Ranger and the old BlackTalon. They've changed the cut dimensions on the points and the areas of pre-stress as well.
