with the usamu method, 2 screws are used to affix the gas band to the cylinder. these screws pass thru the spindle valve, making it no longer function as designed. you get open position only.

I've noticed my unitized welds have cracked on my NM. I've been shooting that way for awhile now. I'd like to have it redone. Sounds like the method you described would be stronger but I do need the ability to turn off the gas when the Fclass boys let me shoot my M1A when I want to have some fun.
