Testing my new Derya TM22

I am wondering what you would call taking your time to get good shots? Is there a time? Obviously you can't expect too much when you and your hands are cold and it is the end of the session.

No, we were basically just making noise at the end of the session. I was using the small squeeze bag from my Savage for a rear rest and was probably firing approx a shot per second.

Other guy about the same but using a different bag as a rest.

I maybe should have been more clear about my intentions. I want to find out if I can shoot 1/2-ish groups with it using readily available ammo. I have no interest in trying to turn it into a dedicated rimfire benchrest rifle, there are many other rifles better suited to that.

If that's what I wanted I would just bolt a rifle into a vise and call it good.

My intent is to see what regular ammo will do in a regular rifle. The only reason I'm shooting for groups is to see if I can set a baseline for what I can expect the rifle to do in real shooting (not in a vise bolted to a table).

That's fair, eliminating as many variables as possible would help narrow down a suitable ammo.

The rifle is generally shot offhand or from the bipod but for testing I get what you're saying.

Long weekend with the wife gone means I'll be spending some time on the range. Hopefully I can report back with some better results than I've brought in the past.

Bipods get worse as the rifle weight/caliber size/recoil impulse goes up.

Respectfully, this doesn't quite line up with Fullbore FTR competitors shooting 308s off of bipods out to 1000 yards. Note, these are almost always using ski style feet.

Picked up some misc stuff to try in it, and a couple different subsonic types as well to see if any of them will cycle reliably. My experience with subsonic .22 is that it isn't very consistent but I'm doing this because it does have its place (I have neighbors and sometimes need to make an effort to avoid pissing them off).

I've had the best luck with rem subs in my semis, found a couple boxes to add to the mix. Should be a good day tomorrow.

None of this is match grade ammo, as I've said before I'm just trying to find something reasonably accurate for a reasonable price. Might be a waste of time but is shooting ever really that?

I'll take the suggestion of using a different rest and see where it gets me.

Will update with my results regardless.

Supposed to be a nice weekend weather-wise here in Sask, hope it is wherever you are too. Get out and shoot your tm22, and take some pics of your rifle and targets. Post em up and let's see if these things can shoot.

Bipod, bag, your girlfriend's ass cheeks, whatever. Like Pendleton's says, let er buck.

If you do that last one, you better post pics.

I removed the handguard collar this morning as suggested, to see if it was affecting accuracy at all.

There is only one small screw holding the handguard in place, so this will just be for testing. If it actually makes a significant difference I might tap extra screws into the barrel nut @ 3, 6, and 9 to increase rigidity. The handguard is solid now but I expect moderate use would cause it to develop some wiggle as its secured now.

Colour me shocked if this actually passes the 1/2” challenge. My T1x did the first time I tried with SK standard (Bushnell match pro,14x)

I don’t think you’ll ever get there with regular CCI which groups twice as much in my rifle. The mini mags shoot even worse, and the S+B didn’t perform much better.

I also shot that challenge with a $27 Chinese bipod. I don’t know what that guys talking about (for rimfire,at least)!

My rear bag is literally a cloth sack from my gfs cosmetic I filled with crusher dust from the ranges driveway.

The whole point is to see how well it can shoot with regular ammunition. I'm not looking to set records. I'm not looking to rebuild the rifle, just using what it comes with.

This is a collection of readily available ammo, so that's what I'm using. I have some other junk like the old blue box 525 packs of Federal and such, but I'll start with this.

While a few groups will be better, perhaps 2 MOA on average at 50 yards is realistic.

You're probably not wrong, I'm not expecting much from some of it. But it should be a good time.

Whipped up some targets to allow 10 5-shot groups on each sheet, one box per target. Not definitive but should give an idea and keep things tidy.

Pretty gusty this morning, will make things interesting. Have to go look at a couple calves then the blasting er I mean testing will commence.

Yesterday's results in order of appearance:

I quit measuring group size after the first two ammo types, the results are pretty clear. And really, group averages don't mean much if they aren't somewhat consistent in size imo.

I went back to SK Magazine for another couple targets, as I've said before this is one of my favorite budget options.

Not a definitive test, but I saw promise in the Norma tac 22, and in the tenex Biathlon but of the two I'd spend less on the norma. The eley benchrest wasn't bad but more expensive than the norma as well.

Take these results for what they are worth, you might do the same test and get different results. Might point someone in a direction if nothing else.

The first target was sk magazine, the overall average was I think .488.

And if anyone's wondering the circles measure around 7/8" if you're looking for a reference as to what the groups are.

For myself, I'll be using norma tac and sk magazine in mine from now on. Reasonably accurate for me, and half the price of other ammo that isn't really shooting any better overall.
