Testing Straight-Pulls

My most recent order from wolverine just came in, a Merkel Helix Arabesque chambered in 308. If I have time to sight it in this fall I’ll try to write a comparison vs my Blaser R8.

^ the design of the helix and the new haenel straight pull really stand out to me as uniquely cool

I used to absolutely lust over r8s but a helix is the fantasy gun now

Yea I really wanted the Blaser R8 for years. Then I had a chance to go see and hold one, and the weight of it put me off.

So I went and eventually bought the Anschutz 22 lr straight pull, 1727 action. Love shooting it. The more I shoot it the more I love it.

If I were to purchase a straight-pull centerfire rifle (which I'm not about to), I think it would be the Heym SR30 with the Fortner action. I have the Anschutz 1727F in .17 HMR with that action, but in rimfire, and really like it. I'm OK with a straight-pull rimfire rifle, but I think I'd hesitate to put my face behind a centerfire straight-pull. I've read of accidents....

I wonder if that half-travel bolt handle would be lacking some camming force.

Supposedly that is an issue, they don’t recommend handloads because of this. I was looking a maybe buying a Merkel, but as nice as they are, after researching problems people were having with them I kind of changed my mind. Lack of camming force, a sticky case that would normally be removed from a regular bolt action with a bit of force is said to be next to impossible with some of the straight pull rifles.
