Texas hog cull

I can't comment on this particular video, but I have a friend who does aerial gunning for coyotes and wolves. He uses an AR15 in .223 or a shotgun.

well hes using a eotech, I can tell that much, i'd like to know the caliber as well, I've read a few things about the .223 not being enough for them. I doubt this is true, but the recoil looks like its more. The pan of the rifles at the start shows....sigh....an AUG/clone.
Edit: what is the item on the side mount on the right of the rifle, he's fiddling with it at 5:34

Been posted more then a few times. And they a government licensed hunters, so no, you can't go to texas and do this.

A recent Tom Gresham's Gun Talk Podcast interview with Ted Nugent seemed to indicate that the practice of helicopter hog hunting was now legal. They removed the requirement for the helicopter pilot to donate his / her time. It sounds like Uncle Ted has a good time with the hogs and coyotes.

that's a loooot of pork sitting out there in those fields. what do they do with it?

it's nice to see that they circled around to to finish off a wounded pig, there are a number of heli-cull videos where any hit is counted as "good enough" and they move on

I got the impression that the gun is in some sort of mount and being aimed by a camera and monitor. The shooter appears to be sitting facing forward and the gun itself barely moves. If it were hand held, I would expect to see it shift around from time to time

I paid a lot of attention, rewinding a few times. Things I noticed:

1. They are in a R22 helicopter. Two seater. Passenger is literally riding shotgun. No backseat/cargo hold.

2. There is no mount for the gun ala huey doorgunner. Cam is mounted on gun itself, most of the footage seems to be from this vantage point. In some shots (maybe from a helmet cam) where he is fiddling with the gun you can see his leg under the gun like its on his lap. Also a good shot of him raising it up showing the use of a foregrip.

3. I think it is entirely possible that he is using a .223/5.56 but more likely that it is a 6.8. I say this because I think the rifle is an AR type platform and .308 would recoil way more IMO than the gun does in the video.

Ya. Hes clearly sitting off to the side of the gun. And its not moving at all. Its on a mount. The thing to the right side is probably a targeting computer of some sort.

ok took one more peek and will correct myself on one point I made :p

I agree that it is very likely that the gun used is an AUG, probably the one shown in the intro clip

As to the mount question look at the video from about 7:30 on

Wow! Are you ever over thinking this.

Watch it again.

Camera is on the gun. That's why the perspective does not change.

Your 'targeting computer'. Find a targeting computer that fits on something smaller than a tank or aircraft.

Think Laser.

take it from someone who's flown that model of helicopter with a guy with a rifle in the left seat. it's a rifle mounted camera. helicopter drops in, matches speed, rifleman shoots. it's all very smooth. you're barely moving, what's the speed of a running hog? a snails pace for a helicopter. most of these guys use .223, it's more then enough to flip a running hog. blood pressure that high, drops fast when you put a hole in the bag.

you guys have way to much time on your hands.

as a side note: the most dangerous part of that job is making sure the ejected brass doesn't slip through the hole in the floor and jam your torque pedals.

Yeah i was thinking camera as well, wasn't quite sure when he was sliding his hand in front of it to check if it was on though.
