Have to love Friday's this fall as Chad started a new job this past summer and only works a 4 day week, Mon-Thurs. That has free'd us up for some hunting this fall during the weekdays allowing us to get on birds before the weekend goose chasers are out. Not that there are any "real" one's around here, all we have here are what I call "fence runner's" or "drive-byer's" Guys who jump out of vehicles and make the mad dash trying to get close enough to bring a goose down and then chase it wounded for the next 25 mins or load a bunch of guys in a truck and chase across a field firing all the way, all the while educating the other 300 it was with. So it was with a huge smile when I phoned Chad Wednesday night to tell him one of our farmer friends called to say the corn was off and the his field was loaded up, could we please come do something about the birds. Chad and I made plans to hunt Friday morning and Chad would go check the field Thursday after work. He scouted out the field and found it barren of birds due to a couple bears feasting in the waste corn. The birds kept trying to put in but were too scared to land. he and the farmer watched from the barn near the road and then shortly along came a fellow friend of the farmers and Chad got to watch the guy take out the larger of the two bears at about 125 yards with his 300 mag. So much for a bear problem for us the following day.:) My stepson RJ had a P.A day Friday so he was going to be off school. I asked him if he would like to join us and he about jumped through the roof he was so excited at the prospect of coming along. Chad and I agreed to meet at his place around 5:30 then head to the field and set up. I woke RJ at 4:15 and he was dressed and ready to go in 15 minutes. He doesn't move that quickly ever! ha: We arrived at the field at 6 am, went about setting the decoys and blinds, stubbling in the ample cover provided by a weed patch in the middle of the field and then we all hunkered in and waited for the birds. I got RJ settled into my Avery M2 and handed him the camcorder and said, just do your best and if you don't capture anything don't sweat it. It can be a little confusing and exciting all at once when birds decide to work us. Once RJ was in the layout I put the finishing touches on stubbling his blind and then settled into my S.U.B for the anticipated birds arrival. We didnt have to wait long, the first flight of birds was over the decoys at 6:59 according to Rj's video of the barren sky... ha:ha: By 7:19 it was all over (again according to the clock on RJ's camcorder work) as Chad and I had our 10 geese down with 9 in hand and one sailer that dropped into some nearby trees( an island of bush in the field). Chad put Reed to work on the wounded bird and a few minutes later we had #10 in the bag. We stayed and played with a few more flocks for RJ's benefit. He was astounded at the geese that dropped in and walked around in the decoys while others continued to circle. After about 30 minutes of goofing around we packed it in, cleaned up our mess, took some photos then went home, cleaned birds and the three of us headed to town for breakfast. We all had a blast. Chad was thrilled by how well Reed had worked, given this was only his second goose hunt. He ran down 3 cripples that were high tailing for cover and delivered all but 1 bird to hand. RJ beat him to the other.... :HR: Here are some pics of the happy hunters, especially the smiling 10 year old "new goose hunter"!:D
