I took the plunge on the Chinese SKS and ammo deal. It arrived today! Canpar delivery driver told my wife that I had ordered a Volkswagen because the ammo box was so heavy. I scarfed down dinner and got to cleaning the cosmo off asap so I could head out to my monthly club meeting. My ever loving wife finished cleaning the barrel and ect. with hot soapy water while I was out! I have a Tapco stock coming for it this week as well.

Nice Rifle....getting that Cosmoline off can be tough I remember when I first got my Chinese SKS it was dripping with it.

Yeah I did a lot of research about cleaning it out. I soaked all the smaller parts in mineral spirits to eat off as much as it could while I had the kettle boiling. The hot water was magic! Just floated it off. I have the stock sitting in a garbage bag filled with some rags and have left it in a boiler room in hopes that it draws it off and out of the pores.

In a plastic bag in the boiler room is a good idea. Kitty litter is great for soaking up the cosmo.

+1 for the Black plastic bag technique.. I thought my wood was finally clean but I decided to try it and was baffled at how much cosmo came out of the pores.

When I pulled the bolt back to check it out pre cleaning it sounded like a rubber boot being freed from a mud puddle! Good idea about the kitty litter. I think I have some zorbal kicking around.

I was watching a youtube video of someone using "green" oven cleaner on the stock. He wiped off the excess and sprayed it down with this stuff and set it on his bench while cleaning the rest of the rifle. I'm not using the stock but I'm not brave enough to potentially wreck it either.

Don't remind me, my CanAm SKS was so packed that when I pulled the bolt back it slipped out of my hand and flung cosmo everywhere..

As for the stock, it depends how clean you want it and how soon.. You can technically go shooting with a stock full of cosmo, it just wont do your grip/clothes any favors. The black bag technique is slow but thorough, while the cleaner technique is fast but sloppy.
