OK it is not quite Thanksgiving but close enough! LoL

With my #1 partner tagged out and no one else handy this afternoon I decided to see if I remembered how to shoot a deer on my own! LoL

165 Hornady Interbond launched from my 30-06 @ 2900 fps

The deer was 250 yards away feeding slowly towards me when I shot him.

After waiting close to a half-hour for him to turn broadside I gave up as I was worried he was going to wind me. I put the bullet down through his neck as he dropped his head to graze while quartering at a tight angle.

The bullet took out the spine at the base of the skull and exited and then broke the off-side front leg about half way up.

He is a fat little butter-ball and should taste real good!

Thanks for the nice comments folk!

Mommabear, not vinegar but plain tap water. I always carry a old milk-jug or two in the pickups while hunting. It is so nice to be able to clean up a bit as well as for rinsing off the knives before you head home.

Pat & John, If you guys plan to get as far north as McLeese Lk give me a shout before you leave.

BigRedd, I was not so much a matter of wanting to wait for him rather than having too! LoL I have no more patience than most other people but in this case I didn't have a choice. When this guy first stood up out of his bed he was close to 400 yards away from me. Even though I target shoot out to 400 yards using field rests on a regular basis a head on shot at that range, especially when my heart is pounding would have been more luck than skill. When he closed to around 250 yards I felt fairly comfortable in making the shot.

Nice buck,The 165 interlock is about my favourite deer bullet, glad the interbond worked well!!!It is nice watching them for a long time before you take the shot.

Nice buck boo! Congrats! I can't believe you waited a half hour for him to turn. You must have the patience of a saint. Good eats over the winter. Take care.

Dave.

Great shooting! I reckon he dropped in his tracks with that damage done.

And a very respectable hat-rack too, by golly!

Nice buck, congrats! Mmmmmmm!

Did you aim dead on or hold a bit high?

I held dead on.

I have the this load printing 3' high at 100 yards so it is at it's highest at 3 1/2" 150 yards, 2" high at 200 and dead on at ~275. I have a point-blank range on a 8" diameter vital zone out to ~325 yards. A lot of people really underestimate what the old '06 is capable of when it is loaded for maximum performance in a modern rifle.

Yep! In fact I literally ran over to where he dropped in case I had just touched him enough to give him a bit of spine-shock! I was worried he might just get back on his feet and be gone! LoL
