That 0.027 difference

I would think the .270 Winchester might answer most of the questions.
When talking differences, noving up the scale from .243 - .257 -.264 - .277 - .284 - .308 just shows how little there is between two that are very similar . To think there is only .007 between a .270 Win and the .280 Rem. Yet there is .024 from a 7mm and the 30 calibre. While the .270 was there before the .280 Remington, I think the 7mm calibre was there long before the advent of a .270. It probably comes with the "Better mouse trap theory",
Although I have loaded some light bullets (110 and 125 grain) in my .30-06, I never tried the light ones in either the .270 or .280. I plan on trying some 100 grain Speers in my .25-06 but will leave that for another day. There are lots of options, and a loading manual will give you many more
 
Hitting a gong at 900 yards with a 243. How much energy does it take to make the gong ring? As much to kill a deer cleanly? lol. I don't think so. Just because the bullet travels that far don't mean it will reliably kill. 270 would be my preference of the two calibers.
