That Damned Crack: M1 Garand Edition.

Swap it out and be happy.

That's the plan. I got the replacement back from Nick at Vulcan two days ago, and it looks brand new.

As to the crack, I was just asking for the sake of asking. For discussion, ya know? The heel isn't exactly subject to outstanding levels of stress, and lots of receivers have been welded back together with much success, witness the cut up MG-42 and 34 receivers in the US. So I was just wondering if a weld to the heel would really be such a big deal.

If I understand correctly you let the bolt snap shut on a round in the chamber and it went off? Is that correct?

I wouldn`t tantalize myself or others about the suitability of welding up a cracked Garand receiver. It isn`t worth the safety risks. Read Kuhnhausen`s Shop Manual on the Garand. Its the best available technical reference on the rifle.
