I noticed that a lot of re-loading stuff comes with a little cardboard square, about an inch by and inch, in the packaging. Both the RCBS and Hornady stuff I bought has it. First I thought it was part of the packing but its always just There in the box or parts bag with seemingly no reason.

Any idea what it is?

Also some new dies have a sprayed on dry corrosion protection, I got a new Redding die and just sprayed WD-40 on it and wiped it down. The first sized case felt like sand was inside the die and the directions I "didn't read" said to clean the die with a solvent like Hoppes bore cleaner. Once I cleaned the inside of the die with Hoppes the dry corrosion protection was removed along with all the dry sand I "thought" was inside the die.

Does anyone by chance how long they last, I chopped up a vci bag that a rifle came in stuck a few 1x1" squares in the safe and in my tool box drawers. I figured it might work for a bit but being unsealed I figured they'd gas off eventually?

No idea how long it would last...I have always just used a cleaning patch with several drops of heavy oil stuck under one of the dies in the box. Never had a die rust in 20 years doing that.
