That shiny black coating on found brass.

What is that shiny black coating on some found brass? It is harder to remove than the brass itself when polishing same with 000 Steel wool using a drill and a Lee case holder.

What I would like to do is see if I could coat some clean brass artificially to get the same hard black finish. A load of black cases with black (Molly?) bullets would be something different. [I'm looking for a project.]

What is known about this coating and are there any receipes to effect this change? Anyone?

Just be careful that whatever you use doesn't weaken the brass.

That would be very exciting the next time you use them.
