'That's a lot of sausage': Monster boar makes big impression on Sask. social media

Never had it but my take on it is if it were that good of eating it would be a more lucrative farming venture. It wouldn't be one where many just let them go to get rid of having to feed them and be stuck with them.

Big issue with farming these things is the difficulty in keeping them in a fence.. they burrow under as much as 3 feet down ( 1 meter ) and they wll desstroy regular page wire that stops bison.

I know why he is sitting so far back............to keep from gagging from the smell !!! I shot one of them big old Saskatchewan boars and I could barely stand to get close to it. They stink worse than a rutting caribou and he was not good eating at all, tough and smelly. I think the dogs ended up with most of him.
That boar sure shows more Russian blood than most, he ain't just a feral he's truly of wild blood. Nice trophy though, I'd be getting him mounted.

You are clueless

SKHunter is right.

Some very close friends of ours raise them, and do well. I've considered getting some myself.

It's a niche market, but it can be very profitable. The ones that were "released" weren't because of a lack of profit potential, it was because of poor business management.

careful there skhunter, you might hurt his feelings ....
Genee, the guy you speak of released domestic boar back into the wild ?
Not only is that so called farmer a poor business man he is a complete idiot.
That is why ( feral boar ) they are mow a problem in Canada and have been a problem down South.
They have bread and now running free causing problems for Real Farmers and others who also live where they now roam.

Yup - that's what the story is, and that was only about 15km south of me. Complete idiots is an understatement.

The two I tried eating[one a med sized boar and the other a 100lb sow] were as tasty as a cross between a dead coyote and a football.......Harold

Really? Maybe you should read a bit on the subject and how more than a few opened their gates in the late 80's to early 90's to get rid of them when the market for their meat fell to very low levels and how many surmised they would never survive in the wild. There was a very good article on the subject in a recent prairies north magazine issue. It covered everything from the history of first farming them to todays niche market to the volunteer eradication teams in the province that go after them by helicopter search and then go in on the ground surrounding them once they find a bunch and shoot them en masse. Maybe you need to get a clue yourself!!!

I think what SKHunter is saying is that currently it is a pretty lucrative venture, that they are pretty good eating, and that no one with a brain in their head is leaving the gate open these days..... I think you're both saying the same thing.

look at me, trying to make peace......must be close to Chrimass......

IF that picture is legitimate, the only way a wild boar would reach that weight is by being crossed with domestic stock. I have hunted wild boar in Germany a couple times, none of the truly wild ones reach anywhere near that size in Germany. I have read of Russian boars near that size, but remain skeptical. Still, it's a very impressive animal. And it is sausage season...

Naaa I don't need it sugar coated. I can read what he wrote straight and to the point and I will leave it at that. I won't add any more though clearly I would like to!!

It's legit (very few in SK even know photoshop exists, me included), and given the irresponsible breeding/containment practices around here, along with the abundance of food, it is entirely possible....
