That's weird! What happened?

Hey guys!

Something weird happens about a quater of the time with the primers on the empties coming out of my Norinco 1911 in .45 ACP.

This load is quite normal, a good old 230gr RN jacketed bullet out at around 830 FPS, so pressure should be normal. I don't see primer flattening anyway... But the firing pin strikes disappear, being replaced by the brass-colored primer cup, with a rather flat surface. Note that the primers are plated silver, and that the brass showing is only where the firing pin strikes.

What's happening?

I wonder if some rounds are not head spacing securely. Firing pin strike drives the case forward a bit allowing pressure to form the prrimer indent back to the breech face. A poorly cut chamber , too much crimp, short cases are areas you can check.

you are punching primers and having metal liquify and flow.

Too much crimp might just be it... I tend to exagerate crimping a little, and forget that this case headspaces on the case mouth. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm not sure how this load could liquify metal, using 5.0 gr of Winchester 452AA that I got left from an 8Lbs keg...
