Have you been attempting 5x5 sub 1/4" groups at 50 yards? Has it been making you pull your hair out in frustration? Well come on in, take a seat, grab a beer and vent that pent up angst!

Since we don't want to pollute the 1/2 @ 50 yards challenge thread with our near misses, this will be an open space for those targets that almost achieved greatness. Some rules for posting: It's got to be close, so your target will need to have A) Four groups sub 1/4", and one group over (no size limit, it ruined your day for whatever reason, come vent about it!) or B) Three groups sub 1/4", one group 0.250"-0.275", and one group greater than 0.250", no limit (see above, you were close, so dang close but [the wind, the ammo, the rifle, that 0.300 Win Mag beside you, etc, ruined your day]).

Example, I messed up one shot on a group that had potential to be a personal best for me in the 0.04's after four shots... but that fifth shot, I must have had a nervous twitch or something, but as soon as the trigger broke I knew I bunged it up. That's shooter error for you, 1 shot out of 25, 4% of shots fired, resulting in a whopping 13/256th of an inch group dispersion (above the limit of 0.25" for the challenge) definitively attributable to the shooter, but that's enough to spoil a 1/4" club attempt :(. Remaining vertical dispersion on the target is congruent with the MV extreme spread for this lot of RWS R-50 (can't blame the shooter there), ruining one other group by 0.007" (James bond would still approve of the group ;)). Horizontal spread might be attributed to the wind (as I do not use wind flags) or the steadiness of my hold, but it is so tight I cannot tell with any certainty what factor might be the cause. Regardless, the other groups are excellent specimens of rimfire accuracy, whatever factor causing them to spread out from a mechanically perfect 0.000" shot dispersion notwithstanding.

So, I'm just going to drown my sorrows now with a fresh pint of homebrewed New England Style IPA, liberally hopped with Motueka, Kohatu, Nelson Sauvin, Zythos, and El Dorado for a tropical fruit/citrus delight in my glass.

1/4" at 50 yards... if I was any closer, I'd have done it. Ooohhhh it's a bugger.

Console yourself that those groups, no matter how wildly dispersed, are still pretty much minute of groundhog eyeball, which has always been more than respectable. Prairie gophers on the other hand, well maybe some room for improvement. LOL

That is a surprisingly elusive accomplishment. I have shot many, many groups that easily make the ¼" at 50M,
but to get 5 consecutive groups on one target that qualify.....very tough!!
I have a couple of targets with 5 groups, all under .250", but they do not qualify in the challenge because of too many
extra holes in the "sighter" My fault, entirely. Both were shot with Remington rifles, a 40X and a M37. [ see pg 24] D.

Cafe au lait anyone? lol

1/4" (.25") group @ 50 yards using a gun that fires a bullet that is .223" in diameter? Yeah...thanks, but no thanks. lol NOT achieving that is like being hard on yourself for a score greater than 18, on an 18 hole golf course. :) (not that I think golf is a worthwhile sport...I don't) Whatever blows your hair back though~I hope you manage it if it's on your bucket list.

Isn't group size calculated by subtracting the caliber from the outside-to-outside measurement? Lol

Correct. Still not interested in trying to achieve it though. :) I think this is the domain of centerfire rifles/hand loads where variables are more controllable. 22LR bullets are too lumpy and slow moving to make 1/4" groups consistently achievable with the guns/ammo 99% of us are using. But, if it's something you're chasing...have at it. lol I'm only interested in challenging myself, which is why I've mostly stopped posting target photos. I hand load for 3 centerfire rifles, 2 of which I varmint hunt with so achieving great accuracy is paramount with those. The other is a 45/70 with open sights. :)

It is indeed, I might have to test/try quite a bit of ammo before this comes together for me, lot quality seems to be the stickler on this one.

Enough head on that beer? Lol

Nice chootin' though...

A tall foam stand is a thing of glory! Ok.. you got me... I over-carbed the keg and it's not pouring too well :(

Enjoy your hot chocolate.......

I will, thank you, it's delicious! I do clear beer too. Funk beer, sour beer, fruited beer, vienna lager, Cali-Common, Pilsners, IPA's, you name it, I can brew it!

Since the rules are for five 5 shot groups at 50 yards for better than 1/2 "
There are no similar rules for this striving to make a 1/4" club.
Post that target with the sighter and I will approve it!!

I’m the same as Eagleye horseman2. I did the 1/4” but too many groups on the target. I did it back in June 2017 while lot testing for my 2500X. The top and bottom 5 shot groups average .155” each but the top group was the one with all under 1/4” (under 3/16” actually). https://i.imgur.com/c0IZ8Rd.jpg?1
