The 1/4" @ 50 Yards Frustration Club Thread

I will post he two ¼" at 50 targets I have shot....hoping to repeat with my SUHL 150 this spring.
22forever, great shooting!! Dave.

That’s some shooting,

If you shoot enough, using a consistently very accurate rifle, feeding it ammo it prefers, then sooner or later
one gets "lucky"
I shot a lot of 5-group papers to finally achieve the results shown. I still have another rifle that I am sure will make the ¼" @ 50
challenge. With it I have shot the smallest 5 and 10 shot groups at 50M, just not 5 groups under ¼" on one paper.
Also shot the smallest 100M 10-shot group with it, so I'm sure it will make it once I get going and shoot it more. It is my Jim
Williams prepped Suhl 150. [Thanks, Jefferson] Dave.

Nice shooting there Yo-Dave and grauhanen. I'm falling behind keeping up to date on my postings, I have a couple targets from nearly two weeks ago, and haven't measured up yesterday's targets to see if I've got something.

I had several unintentional discharges that day upon bolt closure, had to make a slight adjustment to the sear engagement on the Fly Trigger. Had no further issues yesterday, so that problem solved. I'd have been more upset with that wayward shot, but the 0.3's group was the second one shot so I already knew the attempt was phooked, what's one more flier for the card?

I'm on the fence about rebarreling this rifle. It's supposed to be relatively easy DIY job. Meanwhile, I'm still after that whale.

Really? That barrel seems like it's got all the accuracy you need for the challenge. My current thoughts lean towards sending my rifle out for ammo lot testing, since the quality of the lots I shoot is still a giant, unknown variable. One thing in rimfire is for sure, never assume your ammo is a good lot, until the target results prove it is.

Nice looking beers! Big fan of homebrewed NEIPA, and I like the hop selection too. I've been using quite a bit of Eldorado myself lately, goes awesome with mosaic and cashmere.

Nice shooting too!

Thanks, I swapped the Nelson Sauvin for Amarillo in the latest version, going to dry hop it tomorrow and keg it on the weekend. Never tried cashmere yet, maybe I'll have a look at it. Got my peach/cranberry sour bottled up, the losses to fruit are just unreal. Started with 20L in primary, down to 14.5L in bottles. Dry hopped with Mosaic, Simcoe and Citra cryo hops. Darn tasty, and hey, still half price compared to buying it!

I’m the same as Eagleye horseman2. I did the 1/4” but too many groups on the target. I did it back in June 2017 while lot testing for my 2500X. The top and bottom 5 shot groups average .155” each but the top group was the one with all under 1/4” (under 3/16” actually). https://i.imgur.com/c0IZ8Rd.jpg?1

Wow, that’s impressive, 22forever! Nice job. I don’t recall seeing the 1/4” @ 50 thread, my search didn’t seem to help because you can’t use the backslash.

It’s sort of a bonus to the 1/2” challenge. While you can only submit the same rifle once for the 1/2”, you can use the same rifle again if it qualifies for the 1/4” “honorary mention”. All the same rules apply for the 1/4” as the 1/2”.

I’m curious why you use the 215 instead of the .22 for the group

Because it is more honest. Match barrels tend to have tighter bore diameters, and seldom leave holes in the paper that are 0.22". To get a true CTC measurement, you average several actual hole diameters, and that tends to be around 0.215" for me.

From a couple weeks ago, results were substandard overall, and this was the "best" of the day. I am finding barrel bedding has not worked too well in conjunction with a tuner, I will return to free floating the barrel.

When one looks at the Eley lot analytics for this batch of ammo, it is surprising that these results were even achieved. I have out-shot 4 Eley test barrels shot from vice fixtures that eliminate shooter error, not to mention I was outdoors vs. indoors dealing with wind conditions. One thing is for certain, no shooter error is evident in my target results, shot errancy is nearly 100% attributable to the quality of this lot of ammo, and this is not a 1/4" lot of ammo.

Eley measurements are outside-to-outside, no correction factor applied for CTC that we usually use here.

A fine attempt there Manitou, one of the best I've seen.
