The 100th Meridian

Me debunk an American myth?
And take my life in my hands?
Where the Great Plains begin at the hundredth meridian
At the hundredth meridian where the Great Plains begin

Driving down a corduroy road,
Weeds standing shoulder high
Ferris wheel is rusting off in the distance

[Chorus]

At the hundredth meridian
At the hundredth meridian
At the hundredth meridian where the great plains begin

You know, all I can envision is a short, stalky guy wearing track pants and work boots and a plaid jacket, belting this song out on his front porch while sucking back an Old Milwaukee. :p

Gawd, get it out of my mind!

Having read this thread from one end to the other, I've come to a major decision. I need a case of suds!

Is that all you easterners think of is drinking  :D

Come to the west John, we will teach you how to drink whiskey, suds are for bathing in :D

Davey is a good guy... he gives free stuff away to young fellas and does good for the sport:cool: . We don't see eye to eye on some things... does not mean I don't like the guy. Rule #1 never hold a grudge...especially with a guy from Ab... chances are he can shoot a long way.
He has signed up for my correspondence course... DDCD-101!

I cant shoot for sh*t unless I have a whiskey or a beer close by and I am shooting off the hood of my truck, then I am captain deadly ;) ;)

How much of this east/west thing stems from watching CFL or NHL? Hell, we're supposed to hate the Oilers down here but I'm cheering them on, screw the media, and I think hunting white-tail with dogs would be a blast.

Good thread Red!

I agree with Salty in that quite often regional differences show up as much within a province as they do nationally. BC is blessed with topography ranging from the thick coastal #### to the high country of the Coast, Columbia and Rocky Mountains to the great plains of the North-East. Also there is a big difference between the mentality of urban vs rural hunters. Big city guys like Foxer will plan and plan and dedicate a specified length of time for a specific hunt - sort of the eastern Hunt-Camp mentality - while those of us in the boonies will hunt whenever we want as everything is outside our backdoor. We may not have rapid transit or smog but we sure do have great hunting and fishing! LoL

I started planning for the upcoming moose season about a week after I got back in the fall. Is that too early?

You think you guys have regional squabbles and hatred you should see the nonsense in Ontario. The northern guys hate the southern guys... all the Moose are north of the French river and the majority of the hunters are in the south...where the jobs are!
The northern hunters are in the minority so the tags seemed disproportionate to them... this created animosity... they saw all the southern hunters coming up and shooting THEIR MOOSE. They did not see the economic benefits from this influx of money to the north only that they did not get a tag every year.
When I lived in the North we called the hunters from the south "SOCS" Southern Ontario CSs... we hated them. I now realize that the crown lands we hunt on do not belong to any single group but to the whole province... the country actually.
Now in the the provincial governments infinite wisdom they have given a certain number (majority) of tags in the northern regions to the hunters that live in those regions. Damn the economic benefit or the dollars generated by the selling of the tags.. lets just pay lip service to the whiners and buy some votes. Stupid bastards.
Not only do we have regional bickering... we have a f**king government that propogates this ignorance.

it's not that I hate southern Ont folks or that I think it's MY moose or whatever else because of living in the North. It's that all the old hot spots where the locals all used to hang out are getting flooded with folks from down south to the point where the locals dont even wanna go there anymore. That's what bugged me anyway. and alot of the Non local southern folks (not all) tend to be very disrespectful of people. they trash cabins and leave garbage all over the place and they never wave to anyone, they wouldnt help you out to save their life. they walk around like they are blody rambo sporting the brand new $15 000 quad and the $40 000 truck etc and while thats all well and good, it's the the fact they think they are better then you cause they have all this stuff and they are from Toronto that just makes you wanna smack that pair of $300 sunglasses off their face.

same problem is happening in BC as well. all these folks from Vancouver flood the Northern areas. same disresepct thing going on as well. why does everybody and their dog have to go to the same spot?

You perfectly nailed the attitude here in the BC interior. Most moose tags are allotted to "Southern" or Island" hunters due to their greater numbers.

In addition to the higher percentage of non-locals in the bush in the fall chasing "our" moose it also seems a good number of these seasonal visitors are slobs leaving their mess behind for us locals to clean up. This actually is a greater bone of contention than the allotment of moose tags.

Well, if that's not stereotyping.... Ignorant people are just that, ignorant. Where they're from is irrelevant. The reason you may see all the southern hunters is because 90% of the hunters in this province live between Ottawa and London. If we all stopped hunting and shooting, the industry would die and there would be severe consequences to the wildlife here, as in disease and starvation from overpopulation.

just an observation:)

Would you rather they all moved to your neighborhood? Let's say they all moved to your road. They would all be "northerners" now, but the distribution of tags is still the same.

blargon makes a valid point...
And I agree with Boo totally and Chopperhead to a lesser degree... many of the hunters that travel to hunt don't give a damn what they leave behind. And this is true regardless of where a hunter is from.
The flip side is a travelling to hunt and spending your money in northern communities on food, lodging and gas.... and getting nothing but the bums rush and the cold shoulder from the locals.
I have seen campsites getting ripped off, and vehicles damaged by locals who feel they are defending there home turf. The attitude goes both ways with these regional squabbles and it is senseless to take the issue personally.
I have an idea, howabout all the rednecks, both North and South, take a long hard look at the big picture and agree that we are all part of the hunting community.
Wouldn't that be special.....

yes well like I said Not everyone falls into that disrepectfull dont give as #### categorey. ive met plenty of decent southern folk just out to do some hunting. but i used to more commonley see the southern folks doing what I previsouly mentioned. I persoanlly dont care where your from, but what bugs me is that EVERYONE seems to flood the same places, and it makes so your lucky if you even see an animal and nevermind finding a campsite. theyre all gone. Just happens that the people doing the "flooding" are all from big city Southern Ontario particauliy the GTA.

I dunno about you guys but I dont like to hunt in crowded areas. If I wanted to deal with people everywhere and people being dickheads Id just stay home.
i would have no issues if people whould just bloody spred out instead of consentrating all in the same damn spot.

same thing is happening with fishing to. take the French river for example. back in the day you could through your line in pretty much anywhere and youd catch something. within a couple hours youd have at least a couple LARGE fish as well. Now adays your lucky if you even catch something and your bloodywell blessed if you catch something worth keeping. I stopped going there about 3 years ago cause it just wasnt worth it anymore. The fishing has gone way down and the place is overrun with cotages and people everywhere cruisin around in jet boats and whteer else. I DON'T want to see the same thing happen to the very Productive hunting areas of N.Ont.
